pore over and pour over
We’ll just focus for now on the verb definitions of these words, and not get distracted by the pores on our skin. If you pore over something, you read or study it in close detail. It’s probably fair to say that a good beauty therapist will pore over your pores when they give you a facial. Contrastingly, pour over means to release something that flows in a steady stream over something else. When you stand in the shower, water pours over your head, and on a hot day, you pour water over the flowers. Equally, the beauty therapist, having finished poring over your pores, might pour some replenishing (and no doubt very expensive) oil over your face, sending you out into the world more beautiful than ever, and more self-assuredly expert in your grip on English grammar.
