The Graph

Graphs can be used for many purposes. Most depict a pattern, relationship, process, change, or some combination. For example, a graph may show the fluctuating prices of oil and stocks over time, or population growth and decline. Similarly, author Kurt Vonnegut described the Shape of a Story by using a graph with one axis representing a character’s good or ill fortune and another representing time—a simple but brilliant way to plot story lines as a reminder of chapter 2 in Figure 6-10.

While many people have devoted a lifetime to studying literature and stories, describing their complex structures and components, Vonnegut’s minimalist Shape of a Story graph highlights the simple elements at the heart of many stories: fortune, as a function of time. Has he left out other important parts of stories? Of course. There is no mention of emotion, for example. Nor did he include point of view. Still, his graph offers a compelling framework for discussion of most books, films, plays, and TV shows, not to mention the rise and fall and rise again of real-life individuals or organizations.
