Jessalyn and I had fallen silent for barely three minutes when a soft knock sounded on the door to the dining room. I’d felt Jai’s presence hovering in my mind all along, so it wasn’t surprising when my vampire slipped inside.

“Can you do it?” he asked the female mage, not wasting a moment on small talk.

Jessalyn rolled her eyes at him. “Like I said before, yes, I can. Having the story will help me account for emotional sabotage in the potion, as well as physical symptoms, though. I go in for a more holistic approach, you might say. And if you guys allow the raw materials to be gathered straight from the Queen herself, I can do my best work.”

Jai only surveyed her, not assenting or declining, until I realized he was waiting for me.

“Yeah, ah, I agree. But maybe just the blood first, and you see how it works?” I said, trying to think through my options. I probably needed a little more time to decide.

Jessalyn shrugged, with an expression that said it was my funeral, and that only made me more conflicted. I needed something to clear my head - maybe some coffee with lots of sugar.

Just then, the door opened again, and Dair strode in, carrying a large white shopping bag with a metallic fuchsia logo. He winked at me and set the bag on the table, pulling out a dozen or so containers.

“Need a gelato break, Cariño?” he asked, practically purring as he held an icy container toward me.

“Oh my goddess, you’re my hero and my new favorite,” I said, hurrying over to grab it and give him a lingering kiss. “Is this the lemon drop one?”

“Of course. There are toppings as well - candied fruit, chopped nuts. And this one is fudge sauce,” he said, grinning.

Clutching the lemon drop, I grabbed for the fudge with my other hand. My eyes went wide when my fingers met Jessalyn’s and she pulled the container from me instead of deferring to the Qilin Queen, like most people would.

“Whoops,” she giggled. “I’d say after you, but my need for chocolate right now goes way past politics.”

“Ah, go ahead,” I offered, giving her a small smile.

A woman willing to laugh but still fight for her sugar? Maybe we could be friends, after all. Not that love of sugar was the defining factor in my friendship, but for some reason, it helped.

“Just don’t come for my lemon drop,” I warned, scooping the creamy goodness straight from the container and moaning as it coated my tongue in icy sweetness. I allowed Dair to spoon some of it into a glass bowl, and he created a lavish sundae for me as Jessalyn watched with a smirk.

“I’ve never seen you so whipped, Alisdair Baxtrom,” she teased. “It’s a good look on him,” she added, nodding to me.

“Ah, are you seeing someone too? Mated?” I asked, trying my hand at small talk and feeling awkward. I took a huge bite to cover - that was better use of my mouth.
