Shadow

Traditionally, as the primary male of the nest, Shadow would have found a lesser mate to cover his Ra’Na’s back in a ceremony that would ensure her continued protection and prosperity as a widow should he join Grandfather’s hallowed halls before her time.

Traditionally, he would keep his mate in the nest until gravid then help her care for their egg during her sequestering.

Tradition, it seemed, would not be a part of his life.

Shadow didn’t realise how comforting the ways of his people were until he was no longer able to lean upon them. The rites and rituals allowed one to navigate life with certainty and purpose.

Now faced with an interspecies mating unlike any other, the old rules cast aside, he felt directionless.

And embarrassed.

He had not handled Fynkyn’s declaration well. His need for Sadie burned hot in his blood, and only their dire circumstances reined in his baser impulses. But perhaps this led Sadie to believe him unmoved? Did she not realise the depth of his passion? How could she when he hid it from her so as to function without having to mount her each span?

Fynkyn RedFang was bold in his pursuit, and Sadie responded in kind.

Shadow had assumed his need to rut with her before getting to know her made him beastly. He had held himself back and look what it earned him. Sadie was hesitant and nurtured the notion that she and Legion had coerced his attendance.

Compared to how she perceived Fynkyn? The Verak had claimed a human kiss and had received a declaration from her in return. He made no secret of his desire and schemed to touch her constantly.

Sadie was Shadow’s fated match. He had matured into a male for her. There was no other better created to handle his ardor. It was foolish of him to deny them.

Clad only in the neural webbing Legion provided her, Sadie sat on a pillow in what passed for a nest on his ship. She snuck Shadow several furtive looks, tracking him with a concerned stare as he navigated them to the coordinates of the Ripper.

It was a fair distance, over a rotation at their current speed and trajectory.

Time enough, he thought with anticipation, setting the autopilot and a proximity alert.

Fynkyn had disappeared into the cleansing unit, and Shadow was going to use the private moment they had to assert himself.

Something in his countenance tipped his hand, because she slowly set aside the cup of warm nectar she sipped. Then something in her countenance changed, because she lifted her chin, exposing the slender column of her neck and leaned back on her arms, which arched her spine. Hard nipples were revealed by the faint puckers at her chest. Her bent legs opened and closed as she swung her knees side to side.

She appeared to ignore him, her face directed across the room towards nothing, eyelids almost closed. But her lashes fluttered, eyes shifting to follow his steps as he approached.

A’Ra did not experience sexual desire. He had never interfered
