RESCUE

The four of them sat and waited in an uneasy silence. Now she was warmed, Dulcie dozed off and the other two didn’t want to talk and disturb her. After what seemed like hours, Glen looked up.

‘Listen, I can hear something in the air.’ He went out, ready to assist. The helicopter’s engines became very loud as it hovered. Within minutes, a brightly dressed paramedic came in and began assessing. He was polite and professional and Angelika was relieved to have some of the weight lifted from her.

‘We’ll take the older lady first, do you have any information that might be useful for us?’

‘I’ve not met her, but I’ve heard she’s become aggressive and may have early symptoms of dementia. Dulcie here has Down’s syndrome, but that’s not a problem.’ He understood, as he knew Dulcie was listening to every word they said and was watching what was going on.

Outside, the stretcher was lowered after much garbled communication. Angelika watched it through the kitchen window. Once inside, the unconscious Heather was strapped into it. Dulcie suddenly stood up, ‘She always takes her handbag with her.’ She thrust the old bag at them, and Glen put it inside the stretcher. Between them, they manhandled Heather out, and she swung into the air with the winchman.

When he returned, he bent down and talked in a calm voice. ‘Now, Dulcie, we need to take you up to the helicopter, but first I must bandage your arm up a bit.’

‘No. I want to stay here.’

At least she was more animated now, even if she was being mulish.

‘Your mother is already on the helicopter and waiting for you,’ he tried again.

‘Don’t want to go.’

At this point, Glen returned from the garden where he had gone to keep out of the way, accompanied by Roy. Angelika saw he was ashen with tiredness, he had aged in a day.

‘What’s going on here?’ Roy sounded aggressive, and the paramedic looked up.

‘These two ladies need to be in hospital, Dulcie here has a broken arm,’ he replied in that calm voice.

‘We look after our own here, they don’t need to go.’ Roy’s voice was rising, clearly he was exhausted and getting irrational.

‘Don’t be ridiculous, they need medical help,’ Angelika butted in.

‘Don’t be angry!’ Dulcie suddenly shouted. ‘I don’t like you and I want to be with Mother.’ She glared at Roy.

‘Roy, you can’t stop them,’ interceded Glen, squaring up to him. Angelika saw a glimpse of something in Roy’s face, more than weariness, or was it fear?

‘Look, Roy, Henry and I talked last night, it’s all ok.’ Sorry Henry, she said in her head. It was Roy’s turn to go ashen, he turned and stalked out.

‘Now young lady, will you come in my chariot?’ asked the paramedic with a sudden grin and Dulcie finally let herself be prepared.

‘Which hospital are you going to, we’ll have to get out of here and follow you?’ asked Glen.

‘St Peter’s, northwest London, it’s the nearest to here that missed the storm. I can’t see you getting out of here for a while, the road’s blocked, we saw it from the air.
