Chapter 14

As Willie and I headed for the cafeteria, I hoped today wasn’t as eventful as yesterday. I couldn’t take another over-the-moon day.

At least last night I didn’t have a nightmare. I had said relinquotoso before I fell asleep, and it kept the demons at bay––literally.

I had dreamed of happier times with Mom, like when we would go to the mountains and stay at my grandparents’ log cabin in Frisco. It was older than the mountainous homes built around it, but the cabin had many happy memories for me. My best friend Julie, Mom, and I would play gin rummy, go for hikes, and just sit out on the wrap-around porch and watch the stars.

A lump formed in my throat. I missed both Julie and Mom so much.

My grandfather had died when I was in elementary school, and my grandmother had been murdered a long time ago. Neither my grandfather nor my mother would talk about how she died.

I gripped my backpack tight.

“Are you okay?” Willie asked. “You look a little tense… or even a little sad.”

“Just thinking about my mom. I miss her.”

“You were close?”

“When I was younger, but then in high school, we drifted apart. Or I did. She was always harping on me about school, about college, and school just wasn’t my thing.”

“She wanted you to go to a human college?”

I shrugged. “At the time, I thought so, but Anton says her plan was always for me to come here.”

“You don’t believe that?”

“I don’t know. She was so secretive about this part of her life. A week ago, I didn’t know any of this existed.”

Students were sitting on the grass drinking coffee. Some sat at outside tables eating breakfast. Vivian, Demi, and Eden stood in a huddle, watching us with evil eyes.

I exhaled loudly. “I can’t take another day like yesterday. I just want to get through today without another mishap.”

“Don’t let her get to you. Let’s get breakfast and forget about her.”

Luckily, the line went fast, and I was able to grab a breakfast of champions: eggs, bacon, orange juice, toast, and a hot steamy coffee loaded with cream.

Bo waved us over to the Royal table. Willie and I headed there when I tripped over something. Coffee and juice spilled on the floor, and I landed on my tray.

A bunch of people gasped or laughed.

Tears stung my eyes, and blood rushed to my face. So much for a normal day.

“Oops.” Vivian covered her mouth. “I’m sorry. I didn’t see you.” Her posse giggled.

I got up on my knees. Eggs and crushed bacon dripped down my white shirt. “Yeah, right.”

Bo hurried over and glared at Vivian. “I see our talk didn’t help.”

“I swear I didn’t see her.” Vivian retreated to a table with Demi and Eden.

“Hey.” He knelt next to me as I knocked the smeared food off my shirt. Class started in twenty minutes, and I had to change.

“I’m fine. I need to go change before class.”

I didn’t wait for him to answer and just grabbed my tray.
