The Nda that was given for Stutterer . . . Snakes and string figures.
The next morning, while they were still in bed, I went out and brought in the horses. My father said, âAs soon as you eat take them back to our cornfield. Weâll come right after you.â Everything was cooked, and he said, âHurry and eat and go down with the horses. Donât take your time. Get down as quickly as you can.â After I ate I got a horse and put the saddle on it, and my mother got one for herself and one for my father. She said, âGo down there as quickly as you can and take your gun along. When you get out to the cornfield, if you see any crows shoot and scare them away.â So I got my gun and tied it to the saddle and put the cartridge belt around me, and then I started off, driving the horses over a hill and across the flat. They were going right along. At Sweet Water I got some rocks and began throwing rocks at them, making them run as hard as they could go, and I was riding right behind them. Soon I got to the foot of the mountain, and soon I was back to our cornfield. Then I let them go towards the foot of the hill. They were all sweaty and white with the foam of their sweat.
I rode over to the farm, and a lot of crows flew up out of the corn. I got off my horse and took down my gun. A bunch of them were sitting on a hill. I put some cartridges in the gun and shot at them, but I only scared them away. Some others were sitting on a tree, and I took a shot at them. I saw the feathers fly, but none of them fell. At our home were the two dogs of ours that weâd left behind. They were still around the hogan. Theyâd been barking at night, I guess, and thatâs why the coyotes didnât get after the corn. I walked around in the field, but the corn was all right. I broke off some ears and took them to the hogan and built a fire, and there I sat, roasting myself some corn. After that I got another horse and went to the woods and started dragging in some wood. When I had enough I went after water.
About that time a lot of dust was coming along out from Mouth Of The Canyon. It was a hot day, and the people were camping there, waiting for it to get cool. But there was one cloud of dust coming on towards me. That was my mother and father with their herds. They hadnât stopped to camp. They came right along and got back in the afternoon and drove the sheep under the trees, where there was shade. I had lots of corn roasted for them, and they began eating.
