It was a nice summer evening for a walk into town. Peaceful. Quiet. Serene. The sun had moved overhead toward the west where it would eventually set. If theyâd stayed home, she could have watched the sky turn to various shades of yellow and orange as the sun said goodnight. Ahead of them, the moon had already started to say hello in the eastern horizon, its faint glow a ghostly orb in the graying sky. It was a marvelous sight to see the day turn to night instead of the yellow street lanterns coming on to signal the end of the day.
Leanna strolled alongside her husband while the children frolicked on the path in front of them. In a perfect world, she would be beaming with love. Instead, apprehension gripped her heart for what waited for her and the children at dinner. Leanna could handle ridicule, but the childrenâshe wouldnât wish that on any child, no matter the circumstances.
âTravis.â Leanna paused for a moment, not wanting the children to overhear her hesitation. âDo you really think eating at the cafe is best to be doing right now? Iâve only just arrived.â
âIt is definitely the best thing to be doing. I want everyone in town to know I have taken a new wife and to see how perfect she is for the children.â Travis took her hand, tucking it into the crux of his elbow. âAs I see how perfect you are for them, Leanna.â

She was quite sure she hadnât earned her place with them, not yet anyway. Did she deserve this family and this man, or was it only a cruel joke played upon her?
No! I will not succumb to that way of thinking. This is the path chosen for me to follow, and I shall follow it. If love is also on this path, I shall welcome it wholeheartedly. If not, I will gladly give my love to this family regardless.
Leanna looked up at Travis, smiling. âThen by all means, I am ready to meet the good people of Silver Springs. I hope they will think as highly of me as you seem to.â
âIâm sure they will in time,â Travis assured her as they walked on, his smile big and warming. Sheâd believe anything he said if he continued to smile at her like that. âMrs. Hawkins may give you the once-over. Sheâs been trying to play matchmaker to me for the past year, after what she believed was a proper grieving period.â
âOh!â Leanna exclaimed, surprised that he hadnât found one single lady who pleased him in any fashion. âAnd you didnât find any of the ladies appealing?â
âAppealing, yes. I wanted a
