Chapter Fifteen

Muscles tensed, face stoic, Zachary stood under the pounding torrent of water that flowed over him. He was exhausted. Everything about the day spelled future disaster in the making. Lying to his friend, stumbling over what he did there daily, he looked and sounded like a bumbling idiot.

Whatever Edgar was up to, the good senator smelled it, could taste it, and would soon devour them all. It was only a matter of time. And there was one thing Zachary understood about Legend . . . He never gave up.

Allowing the heat to ease his tension slowly, Zachary thought back to when they lost a terrorist they were tracking in Afghanistan. In defeat, Zachary had halted the hunt for the night. The men prepared to buckle down when Legend asked for the first watch. The men were grateful, but instead of waking halfway through the night for their watch, they awoke the next morning with the terrorist gagged and bound to a tree. He was barely alive, skin hanging loosely from various areas of his body. Legend must have half-carried or dragged him back to the campsite. And there Legend was, eating his rations with a deadly gleam in his eye, his knife stuck in the ground by his feet. He then calmly announced to the unit that he knew where the terrorists were making camp, and it was time to go hunting.

A towel now slung around his neck, Zachary opened the bathroom door to Sylvia lying on his bed.

“Right on time, honey.” Inhaling deeply, she simpered, “You smell divine and look even better.”

Quickly placing the towel around his waist, Zachary stopped. “Sylvia, I moved out of our room for a reason.” Then going to the closet and taking out his robe, he slid into it. “To what do I owe this honor?”

Sylvia slid off the bed, her mouth in an unattractive moue, and slinked over to Zachary, stroking the lapels of his robe she attempted to open. But he caught her hands and removed them. “Uh, no, thank you. What can I do for you?”

“You can act like I’m your wife!”

“Now, that would mean that you weren’t out in these streets acting as though you didn’t have a husband.”

Stomping over to the bed, Sylvia folded her arms in frustration. “You took my name off two of your bank accounts. How were you able to do it? I never signed to be taken off.”

“Sure you did when you signed the papers to increase my life insurance. Unfortunately, you were so busy signing up for more money, you never read any of the papers you were signing.”

“How could you, Zachary?”

“Originally, I did it because you were spending us into the poorhouse. I had to do something to slow you down. You still have access to the household bank account.”

Screaming, Sylvia jumped up. “That’s chicken scratch! I can’t live off that.”

“It’s more than you made when you were working a nine to five. Woman, you are bleeding me dry. Those accounts were fat from my time in the military.
