Epilogue
Cody leaned on the fence and watched as Mario put the colt Blackhawk had sired through its paces. For the first time since heâd gotten into the business of raising horses, he had found one he thought might actually be capable of running in the Kentucky Derby. Of course, that was down the road, but the idea was exciting and had put a whole new light on the breeding business he had started soon after his motherâs death. He had needed a career that would allow him to make his life on the ranch. Breeding and selling Thoroughbreds had become that career. It was Bethany who had suggested getting into the racing business, and to Codyâs surprise, he loved it.
âIt will certainly only add to your reputation for having the best stock,â she had reasoned. âBesides, it could be fun.â
Funâno, joyâwas what Bethany had brought to his life in the year and a half since theyâd gotten married. Every day was an adventure. He was never quite sure what she might say, do or suggest.
Like the way she had elected to tell him she was pregnant just eight months earlier. Sheâd been standing in the middle of their now furnished great room when he came home that evening. She had been looking at the upstairs loft and frowning.
âWe need a bigger place,â she muttered as he hung up his jacket and hat in the hallway.
Uh-oh, he had thought. Here it was. Life on the ranch was too isolated, too confining. Well, it had been a good year and to be fair she had been a real sport about the whole thing. Now it was her turn.
âI have to run up to Chicago on Friday. You could come along and see whatâs available.â
âI donât want to live in Chicago,â she had replied, her eyes wide with surprise. âWhat on earth would have made you think such a thing?â
Cody shrugged. âI thought you said we needed more room.â
âWell, we do. Weâre about to double the occupancy in this place and franklyââ
Cody had started to protest and then the light had dawned. On their wedding night they had decided that knowing what they knew about time, they did not want to wait to start their family. But in spite of numerous false alarms, Bethany had not gotten pregnant.
âAre youâ?â
âI am. And guess what?â
âYouâre okay?â
âIâm fine. Come on. Guess. I gave you a great hint already.â
âI donât know.â Then he mentally rehashed her words. âTwins?â
âTwins,â she confirmed.
Their joy had had to be shared with everyone they knew. They had spent hours on the phone calling friends and family, telling everyone the news. Over the next several months Bethany had taken on that glow that comes with impending motherhood. Together they had designed and overseen construction of an addition to the house, declining Erika and Ianâs invitation to move into the main house.
âNot our style,â Cody had assured his father, and Bethany had agreed.
âWeâre just plain folks,â she had drawled, to Ianâs delight. âYou keep this fancy place for you and the missus.
