Some general findings
Basic information about the interviewees from the first and second generations is given in Tables 1 and 2.
How do the interviewees tell their stories?
The interviewees reveal their lives in different ways. In interpreting them, it is important not to treat them as quasi-objective presentations of events, but as subjective looks backward, undertaken, in many cases, from a post-trauma state of mind.
In general, the interviewees of both age groups were very cooperative, trusting, and friendly to their interviewers. Interviewers could sense that their partners—even those who had initially agreed to take part out of complaisance—were implicitly seeking help with impressions they had not yet come to terms with. In every case, the interviewees presented themselves as they see themselves—that is, there was no distancing in the sense of imagining how matters might appear to someone else. Apparently, the subjects have great difficulty stepping back from their own experiences, their own judgements. Especially for the first-generation people, who are, after all, elderly, it was sometimes punishing to come into contact with their old hurts. Yet, all the interviewees seemed to feel the urge to unburden themselves by sharing personal experiences with an interested listener—a novel opportunity: for, in every case, this conversation was the first on this subject after years of concealment or self-protective silence.
