THE AUSTRALIAN ADVANCED PARTIES
Ahead of Sefik, the small parties of the 9th and 10th battalions under Lieutenants Plant, Loutit and Haig had reached Third Ridge. Breasting it well to the south of Anderson Knoll, Plant could look out across the plain. Behind him the two companies that were originally tasked to seize this area of Third Ridge were nowhere to be seen. When Sefik’s force approached his isolated post, Plant ordered his group to retire to avoid being cut off, and headed back across Legge Valley for the main firing line on Second Ridge.
Further north Loutit and Haig reached Adana Spur to the south-west of Scrubby Knoll. While Bean records that they halted in the face of enemy resistance from Third Ridge, Loutit later hotly denied this, claiming that he stopped because he realised that he was outrunning the main body and decided to wait for them to arrive. Taking two men, he then made his way up the spur to the crest of Third Ridge, reaching it near Hill 165, and looked out to the Narrows. The party was then fired on, possibly by Private Adil’s section of the 2nd Platoon, and one of his men was wounded in the stomach. Returning down the spur he discovered that his platoon had been engaged by a small Turkish force to their front. ‘If you want my honest opinion,’ Loutit said later, ‘I think the Turks came back when they realised we had stopped chasing them.’ Seeing Australians on the forward edge of the 400 Plateau, he sent a man back for reinforcements, and eventually a party of the 9th Battalion under Captain John Ryder joined him.
