“And, please, don’t even pass Mary’s whereabouts on to him. There are issues I’m not at liberty to discuss, but suffice to say that Mary is very determined to stay hidden.”

“I wouldn’t betray your trust like that.”

“I’m sure you wouldn’t.” Sarah shot Jasmine with a look that made her cheeks heat.

“I wouldn’t either, Sarah.”

“I hope not.”

The comment stung, though Jasmine was sure Sarah hadn’t intended it to. She stood, smiling, trying to act as if she weren’t hurt. “I hope you two will excuse me, but I’ve got some work that needs to be done.”

She hurried down the hall before either could try to stop her. Not that either did. No one called for her to return. No

one asked her to stay. Jasmine was surprised at how much it bothered her. She’d thought she was content to move through the world alone; that she’d gotten used to the solitary life she’d created. Maybe she’d been wrong.

She grabbed her sketch pad, then finished up the last sketch for the alphabet book with the quick ease that came from practice. She’d drawn a dozen or more prancing zebras in the past few years. “Enjoying the scenery.” He grinned, grabbing her hand and tugging gently. “Come on out.”

“I’m too old to sneak out windows.”

“Who said anything about sneaking?” Before she knew what he was doing, he put both hands under her arms and lifted her, pulling her out through the window and setting her on her feet.

It was cold, but her cheeks were flaming, her heart tap dancing to the tune of her racing pulse. “You’re lucky you didn’t break your back.”

“Lifting you?” He laughed, grabbing her hand and leading her down toward the lake. “It would take five of you to do that.”

“If you’re going to try to convince me to go with you Wednesday night, forget it.”

“The thought had crossed my mind.”

“It’s not like we got any information today. Going to Fellowship Community was a waste of time.”

“I wouldn’t call it that. We learned Mary’s parents are worried, that her father is angry with Sarah, and that her mother is desperate to find her.”

“We also know the reverend is creepy.”

“That, too.” As he
