At supper the next night, Daed said, “I’m glad Rhett brought up our vacation today. We’ve been so busy with that new field I’ve been forgetting to mention that all those cottages were already booked for this weekend. With buying that property and making plans for it, I waited too long to contact them.”

Esther frowned. “What about the weekend after?”

“I didn’t check.” He took a slice of watermelon from the platter in the middle of the table and placed it on his plate. Usually they ate watermelon outside, but it had started raining a couple of hours ago. “We’ve always gone the second weekend of July. It’s tradition.”

She knew better than to argue with him. One glance at her mother told her she was right. Her father would forgo vacation before he’d change the date. She pushed at a watermelon seed with her fork, disappointed. She enjoyed their yearly vacations, and she’d been looking forward to this one.

“So we’re going camping instead,” Daed proclaimed.

“Camping?” Sarah said, looking incredulous. “In a tent?”

Daed held up two fingers. “Two tents. Reuben and Rhett can share one.”

Reuben was grinning so widely Esther thought his face had to hurt.

Sarah scowled at him. “What are you so happy about?”

“I don’t have to share with you two.” He pointed his fork at her, then at Esther. “This will be the best vacation ever.”

“Mamm, are you okay with this?” Sarah asked.

“Of course. Yer daed and I used to geh camping before you kinner were born. I even found our old sleeping bags, and they’re in gut shape.”

“We’ll have to get four more.” Daed took a bite of his watermelon, then wiped his bearded chin with his napkin. “Plus another tent.”

“I called and reserved a fishing charter for Saturday,” Rhett added, looking at Esther. “We’ll have the boat for the whole day.”

“Count me out,” Reuben said. He pushed his plate away.

Esther wasn’t surprised Reuben wasn’t interested in an all-day charter. Her brother could fish for a couple of hours, but he got bored quickly.

“I’ll geh,” Sarah said.

“But you get motion sickness,” Mamm reminded her.

Reuben nudged Rhett with his elbow. “Last time she was on a boat she barfed over the side. Twice. And that was in a little canoe.”

Sarah’s lips pressed into a thin line. “That was ten years ago.”

“I don’t think being on the water all day is a gut idea.” Mamm patted her hand. Her family had been slipping into Deitsch with Rhett present from time to time, which Esther noticed he actually seemed to appreciate. “I thought you and I could spend the daag at the gift shops instead.”

Sarah nodded, her lips still tight.

Esther looked away from her sister and glanced at Judah. He’d been quiet during the conversation, and she expected him to be gazing at Sarah, or at least looking at her with concern since Reuben had just embarrassed her. Instead his attention was on her father. “I’ve got a tent you can use,” he said. “Extra sleeping bags too. Are you camping at the state park?”

“Ya,” Daed said, taking a bite of the watermelon rind as was his habit.
