Chapter 8

Leah shook her head. “I didn’t do anything yet.”

“You’ve obviously disrupted their pattern, now that they know we’re on to them.”

“And yet why go ahead with it?” she asked.

“They must have a really good reason for doing all this, what with the increased chances that they’ll be caught,” he noted quietly.

“And, if they managed to pull it off, I wouldn’t be at all surprised if it’s their last job, if they get a decent amount of money out of it and just disappear,” she announced, staring at him.

“If it is good money that they don’t intend to let go of, then they won’t want to share it.”

“So, no honor among thieves?”

“None that I’ve ever seen,” he said, with a nod. Just then his phone buzzed. He looked down to see a text message from Tesla. “Axel and Jonas are on their way back.”

“Good, so at least they’re safe.”

“They are, and they have some news.”

“Good,” she replied. “I’m getting tired of being boxed in here. And obviously we’re no longer safe here.”

He gave Leah a measured glance. “Yeah, that whole safe house name? it’s kind of a misnomer sometimes.”

“You think?” she stated in a scoffing tone.

“No, seriously, they are good to a point, but eventually anyone with any skills can track us down, and we need to move.”

“Since it’s no longer safe—not to mention the damage at the front door from that little explosion—and we’ll leave anyway, I have a suggestion,” she stated. “I suggest my place. I need clothes anyway, and I want to shower and have access to my own computer equipment.”

“We’ll see, as soon as the guys get back,” Lachlan noted.

“It really shouldn’t have anything to do with them,” she said in a frustrated tone.

“It doesn’t,” he agreed, “but we have to make a plan to get out of here quietly.”

“How about we just walk out the front door, like everybody else?” she asked, glaring at him.

He turned on his charm. “I do like it when you get feisty.”

She threw up her hands. “Not that again.”

“Why not?”

“You’re just trying to distract me.”

“Yeah, well, is it working?” he asked curiously.

She didn’t know what to say to that at first, so she stared at him. “Seriously?”

“Think about it,” he said. “I’m not leaving until the rest of the team gets back, so there’s no need to rush. We need to have a plan, and we want to ensure we only step outside to put this whole scenario to rest. We don’t want to keep changing locations.”

“Why not?” she asked, glaring at him. “It’s got to be better than sitting here all cooped up.”

“Has it been that tough?” he asked.

“Yes, and no. Fine then.” She threw herself down on the couch.

“Why don’t you take a look at the cameras outside your apartment and see if it’s safe.”

“Oh, I can do that.” She jumped up.

He smiled at that. Just like anybody else, she needed to have something to do. She needed something to channel that energy into, and she definitely had a lot of energy.
