The American Missionary was the official organ of the American Missionary Association (AMA), an organization founded by abolitionists in the mid-nineteenth century to proselytize through the establishment of churches and schools abroad and in the United States. In addition to having a presence in Africa, the AMA played an important role in founding and sustaining schools throughout the South during Reconstruction. To commemorate the Lincoln centennial, several African Americans who had either benefited from AMA institutions or were otherwise involved in educating Black students were asked to provide their reflections on Lincoln and the Emancipation Proclamation. Their responses were published in a special issue that was devoted to celebrating the one hundredth anniversary of Lincoln’s birth.
