Amaryllis slipped into my shirt, the material nearly swallowing her tiny frame. I felt a pang of concern—we had to get out of here. She needed real food and a proper bed. I never wanted to see her hurt again. My jaguar paced inside, agitated. He had wanted to sink our teeth in her neck and complete the bond, but I had reigned him in. I already felt guilty for the way Dagger and I had lost control of our beasts. We’d dragged her into the jungle to have our way with her.

“Well, this is awkward. Huh?” Her voice was breathless, and she had let her hair fall forward to cover her face.

It took me a minute to realize that she was shy. While it was adorable, I couldn’t have my mate feeling embarrassed around me. Settling myself back down onto the moss next to her, I took her hand in mine. I wanted to pull her into my arms, but first she needed more of an explanation about our kind.

“I am sure you have so many questions right now,” I said.

She snorted, and then glanced up with a wry smile. “I have so many questions that they have become a jumble in my head,” she confessed. “I can’t even figure out where to begin.”

I chuckled and reached up, tucking a wavy lock of fiery red hair behind her ear. I wanted to watch every expression as it flitted across her face.

“Is what just happened considered normal with jaguars?” she asked. “We barely know each other. I’ve never even shared a bed with more than one person! I don’t know what happened. One minute I was thinking rationally, and the next I was ready to carry both your babies!”

Raising myself on my elbow, I slid a hand around her neck and pulled her toward me until my mouth pressed against hers. At first her body was tense, then slowly the anxiety melted away and she relaxed into me.

“I know this is all new to you, but it’s natural,” I said as we pulled away. “In the shifter world, we would have already been bonded to you, little female. We would be spending the next week memorizing every curve of each other’s body. Among our kind there is no reason to hold back our jaguars, or our animalistic instincts, when it comes to the mate bond. I also know that in the human world, courtships are customary. Some humans court each other for years before making the decision to become life mates. Shifter magic allows us to complete the bond with a bite, while the humans often have a wedding ceremony to confirm their bond.”

“So that was normal?” She waved her hand weakly towards the patch of mossy grass, indicating the bed and us.

I wondered what was so great about being “normal”, and why she seemed concerned about it. “Yes, love. It was natural, you have nothing to feel embarrassed about.”

I cupped her face in my hand. She sighed and leaned into my palm.
