Chapter Fourteen

Vivien

I am in deep, deep trouble. When I left my parents’ house and committed to keeping my promise to Ezra, I realized I wanted to keep my promise to Beck, too. I’d try, truly try, to give this thing a shot with him rather than merely bumble through it for two weeks. My ride to Beck’s house was transformative in many ways, not the least of which was discovering that I am oddly okay with developing stronger feelings for him.

When he opened the door, his golden eyes so full of excitement, my heart swooped, and my stomach bottomed out. Then, when I looked up at him on the sofa, everything clicked. I do want to try. And—shockingly—I want it to work. I can’t figure out when it happened or why, but at some point, my feelings for him leveled up. I want him to be happy, and I want to be the reason.

And that kiss. I still feel it on my lips. It shattered the last remnants of hesitation I had about going all in for this trial.

“So, you still haven’t told me what you want to do,” he says.

“Whatever you want. Surprise me.”

He turns the heat on full blast, but it will be a while before it warms up. I rub my hands together while he thinks of a place to take me for our first official date. It makes me a little giddy.

“How about we drive around and talk? Twenty questions?” he offers.

“Ten each, and you’ve got a deal.”

“Agreed and I know a place we can get hot chocolate this late if you want. Cookies, too.”

“Now you’re speaking to my heart,” I say, then blush because I hadn’t meant to say that out loud. But it’s true. Food. It is the key to my heart, and Ezra is a locksmith. It turns out Beck is at least proficient enough to make me smile. “Wait,” I say, hesitation filling my chest. “We’re not going to Sweet and Salty are we? Won’t it be weird to have a date at your parents’ café?”

“Not a chance. This place is more of a cookie and cupcake place than a coffee and pastry place like Sweet and Salty. Mom is friends with the owner, so I don’t feel bad about giving them money.” He grins, knowing that cookies and cupcakes aren’t all that far from being competition for his mother’s shop in our tiny town.

He offers his casted hand palm up on the center console but keeps his eyes on the road. I hesitate, knowing what it will mean if I so much as brush a finger over his, let alone interlace them as much as I can while they are constrained. He glances at me from the corner of his eye, then slowly withdraws his hand, working hard to seem as natural as possible. I don’t mean for him to think I’m not interested. I’m merely contemplating this turn of events. We’ve gone from almost enemies who barely said more than two words a day to each other, and now all I want to do is kiss him all the time and make him smile.
