Chapter Five

~~~
The speed with which Dennis figured out a course of action took him by surprise. His entire being received a jolt when the idea first rammed into him, and from that moment on, he took barely a second to second-guess himself about it. He started working on his idea right away, doing a little research and writing out a preliminary sketch, and then he engaged in necessary back and forth over some emails and a video chat.
Once all systems were as “go” as he could get them to be, he made ready to bring the topic up to Chantelle. He waited for an early evening while the two of them were out jogging after work, the lengthening days of spring making time at this time of day for this kind of physical affliction only Chantelle could wheedle Dennis into.
What with the decent amount of other joggers, walkers, and bicyclists out taking advantage of the weather and daylight, Dennis was doing his best not to appear as though he were huffing and struggling his way alongside the lively Chantelle, but he was starting to huff and struggle regardless. This was the same lakeside path they’d done laps on for that charity run in the past. Was Chantelle sure they hadn’t jogged a whole bunch of kilometers or millions of miles again today?
“Gah!” Dennis eventually belted out with as much vigor as his fatigue allowed him to belt, which wasn’t much.
Chantelle glanced over at him, keeping up her pace. “Are you really that tired and out of shape, or just mad? I know you’d rather be bowling right now, or streaming one of those wildlife documentaries you love so much.”
“Psh. B-bowling and l-learning about nature,” Dennis answered between huffs, “are valuable uses of time. They beat going out shopping for d-dozens of heels that kill your feet and watching drool-worthy rom-coms.”
“You mean ‘swoon-worthy,’ but if you know they’re nicknamed ‘rom-coms’ in the first place, you’re more into them than you’ll admit. No complaining the next time we watch one.”
“Everybody knows those c-cornball nicknames. Rom-coms. Chicken flicks.”
“Chick flicks, dude. You’re being a pain on purpose. And no complaining about ’em.”
“If that means the next time we go b-bowling, you won’t complain because I don’t let you request gutter guards for your r-rampant gutter balling, you’ve got a deal.”
Chantelle laughed at that.
Man. This chick had the strength to toss her head and laugh while running millions of miles.
Dennis’s protesting legs and lungs kept up with his jogging companion for a few more minutes before he cried out again. “All right—mercy! Uncle! Wh-whatever the magic word is to stop this dang train. Let me off.”
Chantelle sighed. “Fine. We’ll stop and rest once we make it back to the spot.”
“The spot” was a knoll located beside what could be called the beginning of the path, and Dennis collapsed onto the grass once he and Chantelle reached it. She sat calmly beside him while he leaned back on his elbow, one hand clutching at the stitch in his side.
