Mordred’s Lament

Isle of Avalon, half past midnight on New Year’s Eve 2017

Myrddin took one careful step towards the place where once a wall had stood, eyes widening in surprise. The Calyx, which he’d sensed all along, was now in plain sight. Its light showered the place with magic and warmth, the swirling liquid inside it like a siren song, intent on alluring him to its side, where he knew he must go. Nora’s unwitting blood sacrifice had strengthened his spell, broken through Morganne’s magic, opened the veil to the Summerlands, surely the Otherworld, where she hid with Artuír. Where she hid out of his reach, due to a misplaced belief he was sure Morien had poisoned her with.

Now, he could join them, leave behind this world he’d never fit into. A world far too demanding and loud, one he longed to be free of. Thoughts of Nora Bell stayed his step, back stiffening at the memory of her deliverance in his arms, the feel of her skin, the call of her love. Her black tendrils of magic, filled with danger as they were, still held him spellbound, caught in doubt as to leave for good or make his way back to where she lay, ready to give him all she had. Dangerous, the girl was, like a powerful potion, hard drugs, as addictive as those. One he knew better than submit himself to, one he knew he must keep away from. She’d own him body and soul, as much as Morganne had, perhaps even more. For he still nursed inside the deep currents of love he’d once felt for the mother of his child, and where Nora was concerned, Myrddin knew there’d be no love, only an obsession that would corrupt his mind, his soul, his very core.

Passing through the arched entrance, an invisible barrier, flimsy and frail, which he broke through with another step, momentarily struck his body. The warmth of the Summerlands, as he’d known them long ago - that Summer, before Camlann took away lives and hopes and all their dreams - reached him from the surrounding walls, the insides of the Calyx. Coming up to it, the liquid swirling faster under his attentive eye, Myrddin breathed deep of the atmosphere he still knew so well, and had missed so much. There was nothing dank here, contrary to the cave from which he’d just emerged, this place was clean-aired, pure, filled with magic and the sort of energies that could only do him good.

A tentative finger alighted on the surface of the Calyx, touching the liquid, letting it ooze under his skin, infusing him with the certainty he’d chosen the right path. Still, he took a glance behind his back, to see Nora, naked and glorious in her deliverance, approach the entrance to the chamber, collide with what seemed to be a invisible wall keeping her out. Her countenance turned from the open, trusting gaze, to a picture of dismay, worry, confusion. Hands stretched over the invisible surface, she looked for a breach, an entrance, found none.
