We pack my purchases into the back of his sedan, the tingle on my lips reminding me of the kiss. It feels like we’ve crossed a threshold. I won’t say point of no return, but a threshold.

I know we’ve been dancing around the issue of our mutual attraction. Almost like we had reached an unspoken accord that we would not discuss such things out in the open.

But they were happening in the background, and I can’t say that I haven’t been working toward this outcome. He has, too.

At the end of the day, I can’t bend my mind toward all the reasons it might be a bad idea to be with Volkor. All I can think of is that I kissed an alien. And I liked it.

In fact, I might do it again.

We get into the car, rolling the windows down until the air conditioner can catch up. The day isn’t hot, but the sun beaming down through the windows mixed with a parking lot lacking a strip of shade equals a hot car.

He puts the car in reverse, and then glances my way with his foot still on the brake.

“I understand there is a pristine lake nearby. Would you like to visit it?”

A flutter trembles through my chest. I find I like the idea very much.

“Sure, that sounds like it would be nice.”

Volkor backs up the car and pulls out into traffic. For all of his stoic warrior-ness, he’s shown a different side today. A side that I really enjoy.

We roll out of town, to the outskirts where hills rear up like green shaggy elephants. Sun splashes across the low furrows of the crystal blue lake. It appears to be all but abandoned save for wildlife.

He pulls into a parking lot conveniently near the lake. When my door opens, I get a big whiff of fresh air tinged with lake water. A rocky slope overlooks the lake, its craggy peak some three hundred feet above us.

It cuts a wedge like shadow over the lake as we walk toward the shore. Our feet soon rest on the paved stones of an exercise trail built to wind about the lake.

“It’s beautiful,” he says. “Though I find my gaze drawn to your beauty instead.”

“Watch yourself, Volkor. You say those kinds of things to Earth women, we might get used to it and expect it all the time.”

His brows climb higher on his face as we start down the trail by mutual unspoken consent.

“You think me a flatterer?”

“I think that you’re trying to charm me out of another kiss.”

He laughs, a good, boisterous sound.

“Is that what you think? Is it working?”

“Hmm.” I pretend to consider it for a time. “I’m not sure. You ‘d better repeat the experiment and test your hypothesis.”

“Science humor, I like it.”

We reach a bend of the trail where it veers away from the open lake shore into the woods. The lake is still visible in bits and patches of blue seen through the wavering trees. However, the area seems to lend a kind of privacy by its very nature.
