After a three-week voyage, Franklin arrives in London on Christmas Eve, 1724. The chaotic city of more than six hundred thousand is home to his ancestors, and he immerses himself in attending the theater while continuing to read voraciously. He finds work with two of Londonâs largest print houses as he awaits the letter of credit from Sir William Keith to buy the printing equipment.
A natural flirt, the athletic Franklin enjoys the attention of London women. The many temptations lead him to struggle with the morality of his Puritan upbringing, which still defines him. Expressing himself, he writes a pamphlet: âA Dissertation upon Liberty and Necessity, Pleasure and Pain.â Franklin argues that humans lack free will and therefore are not morally responsible for their actions. Eventually, Franklin regrets that point of view because it goes against the morality of Deist thinking.
He will also regret writing to Deborah Read, telling her that he has no intention of leaving London. On August 5, 1724, she marries a British carpenter named John Rogers. At the same time, Benjamin Franklin experiences another setback: Governor Keith is reneging on his promise. There will be no letter of credit forthcoming.
Soon, a broke Benjamin Franklin returns home to Philadelphia after borrowing money for the passage. But he must still pay off the debt from the trip home, forcing him to work for merchant Thomas Denham. Three years after first setting foot in Philadelphia, the now twenty-year-old Franklin is no further advanced in his career than the day he arrived.
