Part II
DOING THE WORK
* * *
In part II, I make the case that you are the most valuable resource to your company. If you use yourself up climbing your way to the top, then all the profit and acclaim in the world will be worthless once you get there. A sick day, a breather, a tropical beach vacation is not going to kill you or your company—but a heart attack or a nervous breakdown just might kill both. I came close to losing my footing because I put taking care of everyone and everything else above taking care of myself. I was terrified of looking like I couldn’t handle it, like I wasn’t fully on top of it all. My self-worth was so wrapped up in Plum that, in hindsight, I can see that I didn’t get the support I needed, from the beginning, before a problem had the possibility of arising. We need to use the precautionary principle as entrepreneurs and take care of ourselves, for the good of our companies and all our stakeholders.
