“I’m surprised that tracer is working so well. I mean, with us being underground and everything.”

“I’m insulted!” Pedro said as he starred into his improvised tracking device like a self-centered teenager answering a text message in the middle of a busy New York street. “I’ll have you know when I invent something I am super thorough.”

Max chuckled, causing the beam of his flashlight to shake slightly as they made their way through the abandoned subway tunnel they had discovered only moments prior. Behind them, rats squealed and scurried. Hard to believe they were only moments ago, in a car hurtling down Broadway towards Columbus Circle and even more recently, just three law enforcement officials walking through the whirl and rush of humanity that is rush hour. And now here they were, three friends, following each other into a dank, rat-infested hell.

“How does she know these tunnels so well?” Smitty wondered. “I mean, well enough to create evil labs and go unnoticed for years down here.”

“From what Bridgette told me of their time together as kids, her father worked for transit and some other family members before that,” Max answered. “She clearly had access to something that only a select few did.”

“Maybe someone in her family was a sandhog” Pedro said. When no one responded, he turned to Max and Smitty with an annoyed look. “What? Am I the only one who has ever gone to the Transit Museum in downtown Brooklyn?”

“What’s a sandhog?” Smitty sighed.

“The guys who mined all of the tunnels that comprise our subway system over the past hundred years or so. They’re also a very respected local union now.” Pedro loved knowing things other people didn’t.

“Fascinating,” Max said just as the first dart flew past his head, striking Pedro in the shoulder and causing him to scream in pain.

“Fuck!” was all Smitty managed before a dart hit her in the fleshy part of her thigh.

Max drew his gun as the tunnel went alive with the hum of drones that must have been set to a sort of stealth mode before the attack. The Halogen lamps mounted on each of the ten mechanical demons flooded the tunnel with enough illumination to blind Max temporarily. By the time his eyes adjusted to the change in light, both Pedro and Smitty lay unconscious, many of the previously unseen cockroaches that had been milling about either crawled away in fright or slowly investigated the intruders with their antenna.

“MAX!” an angry woman’s voice boomed from the speakers installed in each of the drones. It was a voice he’d often heard in nightmares, since their first encounter.

“Damn you, Kendra!” Max had turned his gun on the larger drone hovering in front of him. “If you killed them…”

“Let’s get something straight, Max,” Kendra’s voice was nearly drowned out by multiple ‘click-click’ sounds of the drones readying their guns. “You are in no position to make threats. Now holster your weapon. Harming the drones will do nothing for your situation and fixing the drones is a waste of my time.
