Chapter Seventeen
Harper blinked at the morning sun coming through the window blinds. The hospital was full so sheâd been relegated to spend the entire night in the emergency ward, getting IV antibiotics and hoping the doctor would eventually agree to let her go home. Knowing she was the former presidentâs daughter seemed to make everyone around her paranoid. They checked on her constantly and she suspected she was receiving far more care than she required.
Case in point, the day-shift nurse was hanging yet another IV bag on the pole beside her bed. How much fluid did one person need because theyâd swallowed a thimbleful of brackish water?
The nurse set the call button on top of the blanket, next to Harperâs hand, and smiled. âNeed anything else? Perhaps another pillow?â
She had three already.
âNo thank you. Iâm good.â
âExcellent. Iâll check back in a bit.â
âTake your time. Really.â
The nurseâs smile dimmed.
Harper immediately regretted her aggravated tone. âSorry. Iâm a bit stressed out. I really do appreciate everything youâre all doing for me.â
The nurseâs smile kicked up to full wattage. âItâs my pleasure to help in any way I can. As I said, Iâll check back in a little while. In the meantime, thereâs an extremely handsome man waiting in the hall to see you. If youâre not up for company, Iâd be happy to keep him occupied.â She grinned and fanned herself.
Harper couldnât help laughing in spite of the past few days being some of the most trying days ever. âIs his name Gage Bishop?â
âIf I say no, do I get to keep him?â
Her annoyance with the nurse returned, tenfold. It was a struggle to keep her smile intact. âThanks for the offer. But you can send him in.â
âYou got it.â She held the curtain back and stepped out of the room.
A moment later, a knock sounded on the wall that separated Harperâs room from the next one.
âCome in,â Harper called out.
The curtain billowed to the side and Gage stepped in, looking just as mouthwatering as ever. He adjusted the curtain closed behind him before heading to the bed. He winced when he saw the IV taped to the top of her right hand and the tube running up the pole.
âStill hooked up to that thing, I see. Werenât the antibiotics supposed to be finished early this morning?â
âThey were. Thatâs saline solution, or something like that. Iâll bet you slept a lot better than I did. You go home after you disappeared?â
âIâve been up all night working on your case. I went to Camelot to brainstorm with the other Seekers, aside from the ones rotating in and out to guard your room.â
âAnd here I am, being completely ungrateful with everyone this morning. Iâm sorry.â
âNo worries.â He pulled up the only chair in the tiny room, an orange plastic one with chrome legs. Before sitting, he tested it first with his hands as if to ensure it would hold him. Then he carefully sat and rested his arms across the top of the bed rail.
