Chapter Seventeen

Harper blinked at the morning sun coming through the window blinds. The hospital was full so she’d been relegated to spend the entire night in the emergency ward, getting IV antibiotics and hoping the doctor would eventually agree to let her go home. Knowing she was the former president’s daughter seemed to make everyone around her paranoid. They checked on her constantly and she suspected she was receiving far more care than she required.

Case in point, the day-shift nurse was hanging yet another IV bag on the pole beside her bed. How much fluid did one person need because they’d swallowed a thimbleful of brackish water?

The nurse set the call button on top of the blanket, next to Harper’s hand, and smiled. “Need anything else? Perhaps another pillow?”

She had three already.

“No thank you. I’m good.”

“Excellent. I’ll check back in a bit.”

“Take your time. Really.”

The nurse’s smile dimmed.

Harper immediately regretted her aggravated tone. “Sorry. I’m a bit stressed out. I really do appreciate everything you’re all doing for me.”

The nurse’s smile kicked up to full wattage. “It’s my pleasure to help in any way I can. As I said, I’ll check back in a little while. In the meantime, there’s an extremely handsome man waiting in the hall to see you. If you’re not up for company, I’d be happy to keep him occupied.” She grinned and fanned herself.

Harper couldn’t help laughing in spite of the past few days being some of the most trying days ever. “Is his name Gage Bishop?”

“If I say no, do I get to keep him?”

Her annoyance with the nurse returned, tenfold. It was a struggle to keep her smile intact. “Thanks for the offer. But you can send him in.”

“You got it.” She held the curtain back and stepped out of the room.

A moment later, a knock sounded on the wall that separated Harper’s room from the next one.

“Come in,” Harper called out.

The curtain billowed to the side and Gage stepped in, looking just as mouthwatering as ever. He adjusted the curtain closed behind him before heading to the bed. He winced when he saw the IV taped to the top of her right hand and the tube running up the pole.

“Still hooked up to that thing, I see. Weren’t the antibiotics supposed to be finished early this morning?”

“They were. That’s saline solution, or something like that. I’ll bet you slept a lot better than I did. You go home after you disappeared?”

“I’ve been up all night working on your case. I went to Camelot to brainstorm with the other Seekers, aside from the ones rotating in and out to guard your room.”

“And here I am, being completely ungrateful with everyone this morning. I’m sorry.”

“No worries.” He pulled up the only chair in the tiny room, an orange plastic one with chrome legs. Before sitting, he tested it first with his hands as if to ensure it would hold him. Then he carefully sat and rested his arms across the top of the bed rail.
