Chapter 9

Everleigh

Pacing. That’s what I’ve been doing for hours. But in reality, it was a short time. After Kadyn kissed me like his life depended on it, he and the others had closed themselves off in church. The meeting room was down the hall, and they were there for what looked like forever.

That was over half an hour ago. They had left the meeting room and gone, who knows where all as a unit. The door to the meeting room opened, and all the men filed out, and all I got from Kick was a stoic, blank expression.

“We’ve got a lead on Lily. All of you stay here; I don’t want you leaving the clubhouse until we return.” With that, he turned on his heel and was gone. No other words were spoken, no hugs, no kisses.

Acting cold and distant, as if what happened between us this morning was nothing. I have the stupid urge to burst into frustrated tears but tamp it down. I wasn’t going to cry over a man again. And here I was, still pacing, and I couldn’t stop.

The club was being led into danger by me. If I had just told him everything, not just bits and pieces, Kadyn might let me in more instead of looking at me suspiciously. Which isn’t surprising since I’ve been keeping pertinent information from him.

My thoughts run to this morning, waking up with him in his bed. The feeling wasn’t as foreign as I thought it would be after so many years apart. He’s had me wrapped in his arms, and I wanted to remain there for however long he would have me.

No! I shake those thoughts out of my head. I couldn’t be sidetracked from what I needed to do. I came back to Briar Creek specifically to get my hands on the money Bull wants before he’ll even consider letting Lily go.

I wouldn’t even know where the club would start looking for her. But I needed to believe that she was somewhere close. I hoped that Bull was at least looking after her, not being a sadistic bastard towards her. I needed to hold on to that little bit of comfort. That at least he wouldn’t hurt her. Would he?

I look at my phone, the time passing too slowly. I hadn’t told Kadyn that Bull had texted me yesterday, rushing me to get the money. Still, I had put him off as long as I could, spending time in Kadyn’s arms when it was probably the last time ever.

“Come on, Everleigh. Sit down. You’ll wear a hole in the rug.” Mallory called out from her perch on the couch.

Lexie had gone to put Asher down for his nap and probably to read him a story because it’s been a while since I’d seen her. She had thanked me for helping her after she had been hit over the head last night leaving the clubhouse. But of course, there was no thanks necessary. I am a doctor, after all.
