Chapter 8

Quin cried out and clutched at Keir, clapping one hand over her mouth.

“What is it?” Keir demanded, taking her into his arms for support as her pain filtered into his awareness.

“Gethyon’s hurt. I think they caught him.” Her panic slammed into him.

“Where?”

“I don’t know. Somewhere dark. Green light. People in pain...” Quin’s words dissolved into terror.

Keir tried to take the images from her mind and received a vague impression of something he recognized with a sense of foreboding. “The conversion chamber,” he said. “He must have gone to free the others there.”

“We can’t leave him,” Quin insisted.

“Of course not.” Yet he hesitated. The longer they remained on this ship, the greater the risk of discovery. But would Quin allow him to send her away a second time? He doubted it. Instead, he took the lead as they headed for the chamber, keeping her close. Within moments, they were at the door, with no sign of Gethyon or what might have become of him.

As they stepped through the doorway, a blur of green slammed into Keir’s side so hard it catapulted him across the chamber. He hit the far wall then the floor, collapsing in a heap. Agony raged over him. Winded, he shoved himself onto hands and knees, seeking Quin. A guard had her pinned against the wall, its hand around her throat, choking her. Keir leaped at it, but it merely rammed its fist into his chest. The blow drove Keir to his knees. Another guard seized him, one implacable arm around his neck as it dragged him back.

Keir grasped at its arms. Anger blazed through him, and with it, energy prickled over his skin. Blue light danced over his hands. He let loose his fury, and it sent his attacker flying backward to crash against the far wall, temporarily disabling it. Advancing on the one holding Quin, he raised his hand in preparation for another blast, but the guard was quicker, using the weapon inbuilt into its free arm and firing before he could defend himself. Keir fell, crippled by the force of it. He could only lie helpless as Tyra-Lee appeared, looking down on him with a cruel smile of satisfaction on her face.

“Did you think you could escape me?” she growled as he gasped in pain. She turned to watch Quin fight for every breath in the guard’s grip. “And what is this?”

Quin stared at the empress, her eyes glazing over.

Tyra-Lee approached her, dark eyes cold and hard. “Did you really think you could take him away from me?” she breathed, bringing her face close to Quin’s. “He is mine until death.”

Quin had no breath to speak, but her face was defiant even in her distress. Keir struggled to move, to get to his feet and help his wife before she suffocated. His impotence as she suffered lashed at him. Her thoughts dimmed as she slipped toward unconsciousness.

“Kill her,” Tyra-Lee ordered, and the guard increased its grip.

“No!” Keir screamed raggedly. “Please!”

“Wait.” She leaned back over him.
