CHAPTER 28
Johnnie kissed her daughter good night and crept out of her bedroom. She had thirty minutes to shower and get ready before Solomon FaceTimed her. However, the moment she headed for the shower, someone pounded on the front door.
âWho on earth?â She marched down the staircase. As she drew closer, the hammering intensified. âIâm coming. Iâm coming.â She gazed through the peephole and gasped. Caruso.
Before Johnnie could react, Caruso burst through the door, splintering the frame.
Johnnie turned to run, but Caruso grabbed a fistful of her hair. âNow Iâve got you, you bitch.â He snatched her back.
Johnnie stifled a scream and flailed out her arms, slapping Carusoâs face. âLet me go!â
âI donât think so.â He kicked the door closed and slammed her against it. âYouâve been a naughty girl, Charlie. I should have put it all together sooner.â
âLet me go, muthafucka! Iâm not Charlie!â
He grabbed her face and squeezed. âWhat? How big of a fool do you think I am? You think I donât remember our last time together?â He leered into her face and jammed his other hand in between her legs.
Johnnie kneed him in the groin. When he doubled over, she landed a perfect right hook. It hurt her hand, but it gave her enough time to make a second dart toward the staircase.
After sheâd taken a few steps, Caruso tackled her to the floor. âWhere do you think youâre going, bitch?â He wrestled to flip her back around to face him.
âLet go of me,â Johnnie cried.
âI donât think so.â Caruso locked Johnnieâs arms down.
âMommy?â Kisi queried from the top of the staircase.
The wrestling stopped as Caruso and Johnnie glanced up.
âGo back to your room,â Johnnie begged while tears spilled from her eyes. âAnd lock the door.â
Kisi didnât move.
âGo, now!â
At last, Kisi unrooted herself from the top of the staircase and ran to her room. A few seconds later, her door slammed.
Carusoâs face twisted in confusion. âYouâre not Charlie.â
âGet off me.â She wrestled her hands free to shove him off her.
âYouâre one of her sisters. The twin,â he said, catching up.
âNo shit, Sherlock.â Johnnie scrambled from underneath him.
Caruso adapted and went for his gun. âFine. Change of plans.â
Johnnie went cold at the sight of the gun pointed at her head.
âCall her. Get Charlie over here, or I swear to God, what I do to you will be nothing compared to what Iâll do to that sweet angel locked upstairs in her room.â
Johnnieâs eyes bulged.
âCall her! Now!â
* * *
âYou donât have to do this,â Alexis whined as Charlie forced her to walk into a weed-filled patch of grass under the CTA train tracks at the west end of a Costcoâs parking lot.
âPlease, canât we talk about this?â
Charlieâs brows dipped together. âDo you think youâre going to talk your way out of this?â
âI . . . I want to explain.â
âOh, I heard enough. I heard how you had your buddy Caruso pull Hennessey and me over that night, and how you wanted both of us dead so Ramsey could take over everything.
