CHAPTER 28

Johnnie kissed her daughter good night and crept out of her bedroom. She had thirty minutes to shower and get ready before Solomon FaceTimed her. However, the moment she headed for the shower, someone pounded on the front door.

“Who on earth?” She marched down the staircase. As she drew closer, the hammering intensified. “I’m coming. I’m coming.” She gazed through the peephole and gasped. Caruso.

Before Johnnie could react, Caruso burst through the door, splintering the frame.

Johnnie turned to run, but Caruso grabbed a fistful of her hair. “Now I’ve got you, you bitch.” He snatched her back.

Johnnie stifled a scream and flailed out her arms, slapping Caruso’s face. “Let me go!”

“I don’t think so.” He kicked the door closed and slammed her against it. “You’ve been a naughty girl, Charlie. I should have put it all together sooner.”

“Let me go, muthafucka! I’m not Charlie!”

He grabbed her face and squeezed. “What? How big of a fool do you think I am? You think I don’t remember our last time together?” He leered into her face and jammed his other hand in between her legs.

Johnnie kneed him in the groin. When he doubled over, she landed a perfect right hook. It hurt her hand, but it gave her enough time to make a second dart toward the staircase.

After she’d taken a few steps, Caruso tackled her to the floor. “Where do you think you’re going, bitch?” He wrestled to flip her back around to face him.

“Let go of me,” Johnnie cried.

“I don’t think so.” Caruso locked Johnnie’s arms down.

“Mommy?” Kisi queried from the top of the staircase.

The wrestling stopped as Caruso and Johnnie glanced up.

“Go back to your room,” Johnnie begged while tears spilled from her eyes. “And lock the door.”

Kisi didn’t move.

“Go, now!”

At last, Kisi unrooted herself from the top of the staircase and ran to her room. A few seconds later, her door slammed.

Caruso’s face twisted in confusion. “You’re not Charlie.”

“Get off me.” She wrestled her hands free to shove him off her.

“You’re one of her sisters. The twin,” he said, catching up.

“No shit, Sherlock.” Johnnie scrambled from underneath him.

Caruso adapted and went for his gun. “Fine. Change of plans.”

Johnnie went cold at the sight of the gun pointed at her head.

“Call her. Get Charlie over here, or I swear to God, what I do to you will be nothing compared to what I’ll do to that sweet angel locked upstairs in her room.”

Johnnie’s eyes bulged.

“Call her! Now!”

* * *

“You don’t have to do this,” Alexis whined as Charlie forced her to walk into a weed-filled patch of grass under the CTA train tracks at the west end of a Costco’s parking lot.

“Please, can’t we talk about this?”

Charlie’s brows dipped together. “Do you think you’re going to talk your way out of this?”

“I . . . I want to explain.”

“Oh, I heard enough. I heard how you had your buddy Caruso pull Hennessey and me over that night, and how you wanted both of us dead so Ramsey could take over everything.
