Chapter Twenty-Four
Desdemona pored over the manifests. She thought she saw the pattern he had noticed, but pulled some more of the historical copies to be sure.
She set all the papers down again and hissed to her husband. âTalbot and Hurley were smuggling.â
He held up a finger to her while walking over to peek out of the office door. Securing it again, he crossed his arms and leaned against it. âWhat makes you think so?â
âThe codes, the extra numbers. They were clearly tracking something that was not explicitly on the manifest.â
He rubbed his chin and nodded. âThat makes sense. Iâd only gotten as far as noticing the two of them were using symbols and marks the others werenât. I should have thought of smuggling.â
âWhat are you going to do about it?â
He took a deep breath and rubbed his hands together. âThat is an excellent question. The simple thing to do would be to sack Talbot. Iâve been wanting to anyway. Should I investigate it instead?â
Des shook her head. âSmugglers are notoriously violent. Nothing good could come of you doing that.â
âTheyâre like rats, Des. If you toss them out they will just move next door, and once there are more of them they will just move right back in with you again.â
âI donât like it.â She frowned. âI donât want you to be hurt.â
He held her arms gently. âLast time people were hurt because I did nothing.â
âYou werenât hurt.â
He smiled sadly at her. âYou know what I lost after that, Des. Not all scars are of the flesh. The ones in the soul can be harder to heal.â
She couldnât argue with him because she knew it was true. It was the thing they had in common, the thing that bound them together deeply. She lay her head on his chest. âThen I will help.â
