Chapter 10
Twelve Hours Later
Zander had met a great many villagers and arriving Morinians. He helped set up security parameters and even had time for a little training with the Colonial warriors. He had missed the morning meal, ate a quick energy bar for lunch, and when he came back from training most of the villagers and Morinians had already shared an evening meal. He was ready for a shower, a hot meal, and to check on his sister.
Walking down the stone pathway leading behind the council building, he admired the clean fresh air and even though it was now nighttime, the weather was still warm. On Norad, they had a cold season and a hot season. The Colony had only one season—hot. It was actually good for his artificial limbs. His joints ached less and he seemed to have more fluidity in his movements.
He heard children laughing as he came around the corner of the building. His sister was there, playing some kind of jumping game with several villagers and Morinian children. He stopped to watch them. Their innocence and ease at welcoming strangers amazed him. Lizetta had the biggest smile on her face and it warmed his heart.
“She looks happy,” a voice said from behind him. He knew that voice and his body responded to it immediately, as if she had caressed him.
He turned to find HonORa standing there. He hadn’t seen nor heard her approach because he had been distracted. Following where she was look, at his sister playing he smiled. “She does look happy. Thank you for taking care of her while I was away.”
HonORa smiled as she watched the young playing. “She is an amazing young female. Lizetta helped me settle the Morinians in their new quarters and has made friends already. The other children really seem to like her.”
“I don’t think she’s smiled like that in months. I was worried about her.”
“Are you hungry? We saved some food for you. I could show you how to heat it up. Your quarters are right next to mine.”
“I’m starving. What about Lizetta?”
“Let her play a few more minutes. All the parents have decided to let the young stay up a little late since this move to the Colony was rough on them. We’re in the first duel cottage on the right. It’s close enough that you can watch her from the kitchen window.”
He followed her down the stone pathway to the first set of cottages. It was two cottages grouped together sharing a wall and a small front porch. Ten cottages were on each side of the pathway, for a total of twenty cottages. He took the two steps up to the small porch with ease. “They went to a lot of trouble to accommodate people who may not be here that long.”
HonORa opened the door. “They didn’t know how long it would be, but they can use the cottages for the visitors they get from the Colonial prime city from time to time. Each cottage has two to three bedrooms and one to two bathrooms.
