Chapter Fifteen

NYX

“God, it feels like we haven’t gotten a chance to hang out in forever!” Raelynn wailed dramatically, clinging to my arm.

“Girl, goodbye. You’ve been too busy for me. The only reason why I get to see your face today is so you can have an excuse to come to Sunday dinner.”

“Hey, I resent that. I happened to have missed my best friend. A lot.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah,” I uttered, entering my parent’s neighborhood.

“If anything, I should be the one upset with you. Ever since you and Mr. Man have started growing closer, you don’t need me anymore.”

“Rae, shut up,” I giggled. “Jamie and I are just friends. That’s it.”

“That glow you’re sporting says otherwise. But I’m not mad at it.”

“You, of all people, know that dating and relationships are the last thing on my mind right now. I’m not stable enough for either.”

“Mmkay, but you like him though?”

“I think after the way you were drooling over his brother; I should be asking if you like him.”

“Girl,” Raelynn kissed her teeth. “I gave him my number, but nothing’s happened since.”

“And why not?”

“As I told him, verbatim, he emits hoe vibes. I don’t have time for that shit.”

“You were around him for all of five hours, if that. Nowhere near long enough to come to that conclusion.”

“And after hour number two, I determined that he probably has three kids and at least two baby mamas stashed around here somewhere. As slick at the mouth as he is, you can’t tell me any different.”

Snickering, I pulled my car into the driveway. “Oh my God, I am so sick of you. That man does not have any kids.”

“And how would you know?”

“Jamie hasn’t mentioned having any nieces or nephews.”

“Just because they haven’t been discussed, that doesn’t mean they don’t exist. I’m good.”

“Whatever works for you, homegirl.” Parking, I hit the release button to free myself from my seat belt. “But do me a favor and put all mention of Jamie and our friendship to the side until we leave here. The last thing I need is for my parents to catch wind of it and turn it into a lecture that I’m not trying to hear.”

“Girl,” Raelynn sang, pushing her door open. “As hungry as I am for your mama’s mac and cheese, my mouth will be entirely too full to talk about a damn thing.”

Shaking my head at her antics, I led her up the steps to the house, using my key to grant us access inside. Whatever my mother was cooking smelled so delicious, it was almost criminal.

“Hey, y’all,” I greeted everyone as we entered the dining room.

“I hope you two washed your hands before you came barging up in here,” my mom fussed, removing one of the lids from the pan on the table.

“We stopped past the hallway bathroom on the way in,” I assured her, sliding into a chair.

Raelynn followed suit, taking the seat next to me.

“It’s good to see you, Rae,” my mom commented, arranging spoons in their respective pans.
