CHAPTER 19

For fuck’s sake, that was close.

To be honest, I thought they were stupid, especially her, dozy Denise. Funny what the need for something can do to you. And I don’t think it’s the money that’s gnawing away inside her, making her veins throb with longing. It’s me. The lies she keeps telling herself: that, after everything that’s gone on, I still want her.

I feel sorry for her, in a way. Look how far loneliness can push you, chasing after something that isn’t there, following the images you’ve made in your head, the words you’ve told yourself. Pushing, pushing you. Until you fall in love with an illusion.

But they want to make that illusion real. And it seems like they won’t stop until they find me, until they find David Kingfisher and get what they want.

I must stop thinking of them, must concentrate on me. On the plan. If I let myself get distracted, who knows what will happen?

Rule number one: I can’t let them find me. I can’t. If they find me, the whole thing will come crashing down. I’ve got to keep one step ahead.

They’ve drawn a blank this time but what if someone talks? What if Fate conspires against me? What if someone puts two and two together?

The time has come. The time has come to put an end to all this.
