It is Jung’s thoughts in the early years that are interesting for us here. Contrary to the assertions of some commentators and the accusations of his critics156, Jung came to see the Nazi threat remarkably early, as we will read in the next two sections. In trying to unravel Jung’s thoughts it is important for the reader to be aware that in most cases Jung first expressed criticism of the Nazis in private and then gradually became more outspoken in public.

The period of hope seems best described by two post-war interviews about Jung’s attitude. Although the speakers were imprecise about the exact time to which they refer, the statements fit within the spirit of the early period.

The first interview comes from Gene Nameche who talked to a number of people who knew Jung in the thirties and forties.157 One of the more interesting interviewees was Wilhelm Bitter, the founder of the Stuttgart Institute for Psychotherapy, who was analysed and later became involved in the attempts by dissident Germans to end the war by negotiation. Bitter felt that between 1933 and 1934 there was great sympathy for the Nazis in Jung’s circle. Nameche sought clarification from him and asked:

Nameche: ‘You did say here that Jung and some of his pupils became Nazis in 1934. Would you say it so strongly?’
