Chapter 12

Kaira

Lisa shows me to a beautiful room. She tells me it used to be hers before she and Markus become mates. It’s a girly room. It has hints of purples and pinks throughout the décor, and plenty of cushions and teddies. It screams Lisa, and I’ve only just met her.

“Thank you, Lisa. I appreciate everything you guys are doing. I don’t mean to sound like a bitch. I just can’t get my head around it all.”

Lisa sits beside me on the bed. She takes my hand in hers and squeezes it gently.

“One thing about our pack is that we help our own. Whether you mate with Julian or not, you’re a part of our family. Jasper will take care of the rogue wolves that have their eyes set on you because he doesn’t agree with humans being affected by wolves, period.”

“Will it always be like this? Will I always be a target for someone Julian pissed off?”

Lisa shakes her head. “Our life isn’t what you think. Yes, we have our fair share of ups and downs, but the connection we all have, the love and respect; it outweighs any threats we get, because at the end of the day we always have each other. We’ll always have each other’s backs, no matter what. You just have to decide whether that love and friendship is worth the hassle. I’m only two doors down from you if you need me.”

“What was it like finding out you had powers?”

Lisa shrugs. “If I’m being totally honest, I think I’ve always known I was different. I grew up around Markus and Jasper. They were like family to me anyway, but there was this part of me that wanted to wring their necks for not telling me sooner.”

“You didn’t like your human life?”

“No, I loved my human life. I still do. My adoptive parents are human, and I see them regularly. I had a good upbringing. It was just a shock finding out about my past and where I came from. But I’ve got a second family now. I’m loved, cared for, and I have a decent life. I love learning new things daily. I adore Markus and my pack. I can’t imagine my life any differently, as hectic as most days are.”

“It is a lot to take in, ye know?”

“I do, and so do Jasper and the guys. No one is expecting you to roll over and accept this straight away. It takes time. We all know that.”

I nod and let everything Lisa said sink into my muddled brain.

“I’ll let you know when dinner is ready if you don’t come back out on your own.”

“Thanks, Lisa.”

I watch Lisa retreat from the room. Once the door closes behind her, I fall back onto the bed. I need this moment to reflect on what I’ve heard. I’m exhausted. It isn’t every day you find out the man you’re crushing on is a character you expected to only live in books or movies. And it also isn’t every day that you find out you have two of said characters looking for you as bounty.
