About a month had past. It was December. Christmas was coming. I’ve gotta speed this thing up, was Jubi’s thought. She’d been taking a couple of pills out of the medicine bottles she found in her parents’ medicine cabinet. Just a couple of pills every now and then. The only prescription pills she was sure about were the muscle relaxers her mother had for her back. The medicinal use of every other bottle of pills she stole from was a mystery, but it didn’t much matter to her. She just wanted to fall asleep and not wake up. The problem was that all she really ever did was fall asleep. She kept waking up. And she was terribly sluggish and drowsy all the time. Daily functioning had grown harder and harder, she noticed. All she wanted to do was sleep.

Class work and homework were hard to do, and that was when she went to class. She became ever more thankful for the weeks when both her mother and her father worked the day shift. She had their work schedules committed to memory, and she cleverly stayed abreast of any sudden changes. The days of when she could skip school outright were precious. Nowadays going to church was more than just an irritant. Getting ready to go to church or instigating the battles not to go had become harder. She didn’t have the strength. Jubi soon ceased waging these battles not to go to church. They were just too hard. Luckily, knowing that she didn’t have long to go, she found churchgoing much more tolerable. I won’t have to put up with this for much longer, she’d tell herself.

Her parents took the new, agreeable Jubi as a triumph, and as a sign of maturity on her part. Thank goodness, they both thought. Trying to act normal was hard. But Jubi worked her hardest at that, because keeping her shameful sin under cover was a major motivator. Oh, everyone would find out after she was dead, she knew. But at least I’ll be dead, she thought. What a relief. She had grown fond of fantasizing about it.

Jubi was sure she’d be dead because before Christmas break she ventured into the school’s library, deciding to investigate her growing symptoms. And actually, that was the first real ray of hope that she stumbled upon. She looked up her symptoms—her cramps, her bleeding off and on, her increased nausea, and other discomforts—and she found the perfect name for what ailed her. As she sat at the long black desk, her finger trailed the tiny black words on the pages of the encyclopedia she’d chosen, and there it was. Ectopic pregnancy. Its recorded symptoms revealed much.

Jubi read intently as the library and all its roving occupants vanished from her awareness. An ectopic pregnancy develops outside a woman’s uterus. And while she took the word uterus to mean her stomach, there was more explanation to behold. Jubi glossed over the next few sentences. Then one caught her eye.
