CHAPTER FIVE
Tarina, standing at the porthole of her cabin, watched the party walk down the narrow jetty where The Sea Siren was moored.
She thought first how lovely Betty was looking and that Lady Loraine, with her sweet smile and soft kind voice was someone of whom she would always be fond.
She had done for Lady Loraine only some small services, but they had evoked not only gratitude but also praise and a sympathy that Tarina found rather touching.
“You are so pretty,” Lady Loraine had said to her only yesterday, “that I am sure you could find something more interesting to do than being a lady’s maid.”
“I am very happy as I am,” Tarina replied.
“Then that is all that matters,” Lady Loraine smiled, “and thank you once again for the excellent way in which you have mended my gown.”
The two ladies walking carefully along the wooden jetty were followed first by Harry Prestwood, then by Lord Loraine and finally by the Marquis.
Whenever she saw him, Tarina could not help feeling that he was fundamentally different from anybody else and, although she told herself it was ridiculous, he had a strange effect on her.
It was almost as if she vibrated towards him and she felt vibrations coming from him when she heard his voice outside her cabin or on deck. But she could not really explain it to herself.
She was vividly conscious of him all the time she was on the yacht.
Whether she actually saw him or not, she had the feeling that his personality was so strong that it was impossible to escape from him.
She had taken great care to avoid being on deck when he was likely to be taking exercise or with his friends.
She also slipped into his study to borrow books only when he was at dinner or when they had put into some port and he had gone ashore.
It had been very hot in the Red Sea and Betty and the other guests wanted to do nothing but lie under the awning.
“It is too hot even to talk,” Betty told her, then added, “though Lady Millicent seems to have plenty to say to the Marquis!”
Tarina did not reply, but, as the days passed, she had the feeling, although she did not say so, that Betty was not resenting Lady Millicent’s monopoly of the Marquis as much as she might have expected.
Then something happened that shocked Tarina and made her feel that the Marquis really was as unpleasant as she had thought he would be.
It was a day when the heat had been almost stifling and without a breath of wind.
When the party went to dinner in the Saloon, Tarina had felt that she could not bear to be below.
She had therefore gone up on deck to her special place that Hunt had found for her.
It was well away from the part of deck sheltered by the awning, so that there was no chance of her being seen by the Marquis’s guests.
It was a lovely night. The stars
