Jett

Jett studied the sky as they set off.

Though he had done as she wished and scrambled to ready the animals and pack up the tent, he could easily see that the clouds were moving in the opposite direction.

Whatever her reason for wanting to hurry off, it had nothing to do with the weather.

Which meant it was probably about her vows, and her desire to forget what had happened between them.

But fleeing from the scene of the crime would hardly accomplish that goal. They would simply take their wild desire and longing to wherever they went next.

He wondered vaguely if he should have just kept his mouth shut and his hands to himself.

But they obviously weren’t going to make it twenty standard years together without it coming up again. Surely, it was best that he had confessed the bond to her immediately, so that there were no secrets between them.

Besides, she was already experiencing the depth of attraction. She should not be made to feel it was sinfulness, or whatever the good faith would call that craving to become one with another.

But even though he knew he had done the right thing by telling her, he was very sure he shouldn’t have touched her.

I did not claim her.

The dragon was feeling sanctimonious about that part, but Jett knew better. He should have told her, and then slept outside so as to avoid temptation until she could make a decision that wasn’t influenced by him pleasuring her.

These thoughts occupied his mind for hours, as they rode in silence, the ice plains glinting as they drew nearer to Boiling Lake.

The path had narrowed between the trees when he heard a sound up ahead.

“Help, please,” a child’s voice called out. “My leg is hurt.”

Madeline was off her stag mare before Jett could react, approaching a young boy who was lying on the path in front of them.

He had longish dark hair and his dark eyes were wide with fear or pain.

But the dragon sensed another being in the bushes behind them.

Jett turned just in time to see another boy leap out of the trees. This one was a blond, wearing torn breeches.

Madeline turned around as well, looking alarmed and confused.

Jett wasn’t confused. This was a classic bandit tactic on the frontier. He only wished he hadn’t been too distracted to sense the boys coming.

Wearily, he turned back to find that, of course, the first boy was no longer lying on the path.

He was standing up, holding a homemade slingshot aimed at Madeline. It was a crude weapon, but capable of real damage at that range.

Jett closed his eyes, preparing to shift and scare the young criminals off, or maybe just roast them where they stood. That would certainly resolve the problem.

“No,” Madeline said crisply.

Her schoolteacher voice was enough to stop him in his tracks temporarily, at least to see what she would do next.

“It’s really tough out here, isn’t it?” she said to the dark-haired boy lightly. “Where are your parents.”

“We’re with the Drifter’s boys,” the child said defiantly.
