Chapter 8
"What's going on here?" Jessica asked Heather on Monday afternoon, her hands on her hips. "Practice isn't supposed to start for another ten minutes!"
"Oh, I thought I told Annie to tell you," Heather said, widening her eyes in an effort to look innocent.
"Tell me what?" Jessica fumed.
"I called practice for three thirty instead of four today," Heather said, smiling. "I thought we could use the extra half hour. The more time we spend practicing, the better we'll be. In fact, we should start practice earlier from now on."
"You're a co captain," Jessica said, shaking from head to toe. "It's not your job to make big decisions like that without consulting me first."
"I'm really sorry you weren't told about the change," Heather said. "I'll make sure it doesn't happen again. I was sure I told Annie to tell you, but I must have been mistaken."
"Jessica, look at these great pins Heather gave us," Helen said excitedly as she ran up to Jessica holding out a little pin in the shape of a cheerleading megaphone. "She gave one to each of us."
Jessica looked down at the miniature pin and wanted to rip it off Helen's shirt and throw it at Heather.
"Aren't they adorable?" Annie asked, beaming at Heather.
"What's the occasion?" Jessica asked, trying to remain calm.
"I just wanted to give the girls a little something to celebrate our new working relationship," Heather said. "Here's yours."
Jessica took the pin from Heather's palm and clasped it in her own. She walked away a few feet, and when nobody was looking, she threw it onto the ground and stomped it into the dirt with her sneaker. That's what I think of your adorable little pin.
"OK, I've worked out a really exciting new cheer that I think you're all going to love," Jessica said, trying to swallow her anger about Heather's starting practice without her and trying to buy the team's affection. "I want you all to watch closely whileâ"
Jessica turned around to face the girls and stopped in her tracks. They were all in some kind of formation, with Heather leading them.
"Jessica, look at this new cheer Heather was just in the middle of teaching us," Jeannie said. "I know you're going to love it."
"But I was just about to teach a new cheer," Jessica said. "I worked on it all weekend!"
"You go ahead and teach your little cheer," Heather said, moving to the side.
"But we were just in the middle of learning your cheer, Heather," Maria said. "It was just getting to the really fun part."
"Yeah, I want to know what comes next," Helen said. "I was really starting to feel like I was dancing instead of cheering."
"Jessica wants to teach her cheer," Heather said. "Maybe we can work on this one another time."
Jessica looked over at the girls, who had whiny, disappointed expressions on their faces.
"Please, Jessica," Jeannie pleaded. "Can't we just finish learning Heather's cheer? I promise you're going to love it."
"That's fine," Jessica said between clenched teeth. "Let's do Heather's cheer.
