Chapter Ten

I FELT QUITE deflated on the journey home and I put that down to the holiday being over and seeing Katie. Which made me start thinking about her again. Like I said before, I'd put her on the back burner and not dealt with the whole situation. I closed my eyes and listened to the hum of the engines. I was going to have to stop feeling sorry myself, I knew that. But, that was easier said than done. When we get back I'll have a chat with Janey, she'll have some words of wisdom, I'm sure. I'd always been able to talk to Janey and was glad she was back in my life. Not just so I could talk to her about Katie. Of course not. Maybe I needed someone to take me in hand to put me on the straight--metaphorically speaking-- and narrow. She could definitely be relied upon to do that.

Janey was staying with me until we both went back to work on Thursday, so it would give us time to talk. We'd also planned to go to Brighton for one of the days. I love Brighton. It's great to walk along the sea front this time of year, get a beer in one of the promenade bars and just chill. There were slightly less people as well, which made it great for shopping. Yes, I know I said I'm not a great shopper, but I have periods when I quite enjoy it, especially in the little shops in Brighton. Then I can shop '˜til I drop.

I must have drifted off to sleep, because the next thing I knew was Janey shaking me.

"Come on, girlfriend, we're about to land." She tightened her seat belt.

"Great, I slept through the whole flight," I said, yawning and trying to stretch in the confines of what little space there was.

"Yeah, and you were snoring."

"Never, you said I don't snore."

"Not when you're in bed, no, but slumped in an air-plane seat, yes," Janey said laughing. "I was just glad I had the head-phones on to watch the movie."

"Then how did you know I was snoring?"

"I could hear it '˜til I turned the sound up."

Then I knew she was joking.

"Yeah, right." I bumped her shoulder.

We collected our bags and got through customs with no problems. I must admit I did have a bit more than I should have, so I was glad we didn't get stopped. Well, it was only an extra two hundred cigs for one of the guys at work and an extra bottle of my favourite perfume.

I told Josie we'd get a taxi back, as it was a ten in the morning arrival. It would save her trying to get time off work to pick us up. When the taxi pulled up outside my house, Josie's car was parked there. I hoped nothing was wrong. We paid the driver, took our bags inside and left them in the lounge and went in search of my little sister.

"Hi, you two, did you have a good time?" Josie's voice rang out from the kitchen and so we went and joined her.
