Chapter 12

The Plan

Marcus leaned across the table, looking as infuriatingly arrogant as ever. “I’m glad to see you’re okay.”

An angry blush flooded my cheeks. “I’m fine. Thanks.”

He was wearing that jean jacket with patches again. Ashley was right. There wasn’t a scratch on him. He looked perfectly normal, healthy even. It was impossible. He had been tossed, beaten, pummeled, yet he was bright-eyed and well-rested. What the actual hell?

“How is your mark doing?” he said and tossed his hair out of his eyes. My nose wrinkled as I tried to image all the things I would throw at his thick head. He grinned at me when I didn’t answer, and I rolled my eyes at him.

“What mark?” Ashley said, breaking the heated silence between him and me.

“Yes, Sparrow, what mark?” Marcus raised his eyebrows at me, expecting me to answer. What a jerk.

“It’s nothing. Just got a cut from the ghost,” I said and glared at him so hard I hoped his soul would burst into flames.

“Thanks for coming,” Ashley said. “I brought Jennifer up to speed about Becky. I was hoping to convince her to come tonight.”

“Tonight?” I asked. Marcus said the same thing at the same time.

“Yes,” she continued, looking from Marcus to me with her brows knitted together in confusion. “Marcus and I are heading back to Northwinds tonight to find Becky. Do you want to come with us?”

I owed her after causing the Wraith to rampage through the school, but was it the smartest idea to invite a Sparrow on a ghost hunt? Especially one who could give supernatural beings a body if she came into close contact? Not really. But I had watched the Wraith burn away in the presence of the Protection symbol with my own two eyes. Marcus had slit its throat. There’s no way the Wraith survived.

My eyes narrowed and Marcus glanced at me, a quick little acknowledgement there was something important he had buried down inside himself so deep, no one could pull it out. He had to be Arturo’s grandson. I thought back to the titles of the articles I’d read that called his family “thieves,” “liars,” and “con artists” of the supernatural. They swindled people out of their money using ghosts, and it all had something to do with their antique shop. As he turned back to Ashley, my instincts sent up all kinds of red flags. He was using her for something, but what?

“I’m not sure that’s such a good idea,” I said.

“But why?” she said. “We need all the help we can get.”

Marcus smirked. “You would do anything it took to find Becky, right?”

This smelled like a trap. I smirked at Marcus and he stared me down, expecting me to shrivel. I didn’t back down, or break eye contact. “Can I talk to you? Alone?”

Ashley shrugged as I grabbed Marcus by the wrist and whisked him through the aisles. I didn’t know where I was taking him, only that it was as far out of Ashley’s earshot as possible.
