Chapter Ten

If Cavendish thought that he could intimidate Victoria by leading her into a verbal trap, the creep was bound to be disappointed. Because if there was one thing that Victoria was used to, it was working under pressure.

No one got where she had without facing relentless competition. The coveted top spots in her high school, college, and graduate classes were only won by those who trained themselves to ignore everything but the work.

And that was especially true for women.

Through her years in academia, she'd been accused of cheating, had her specimens ruined, and been caught in the crossfire of departmental politics. In the end, she'd learned that her best weapon was a blind eye, a bland smile, and outperforming every last one of the bastards who wanted to take her down.

Just as in the past, she'd had no other option today. She'd known that evading Cavendish's increasingly pointed questions would have been the same as admitting guilt. Just like she'd known that it would be only a matter of time before one of the staff became suspicious of her nighttime activities. She'd just hoped it wouldn't happen so soon.

Victoria knew she hadn't helped matters by asking Medina about the operation of the cage, but she needed that information. The opening of the feeding door was the perfect opportunity. Asking questions at any other time would have raised even more alarms.

She had assessed the risk and found it acceptable. And her calculation had been correct.

Or...nearly correct.

The fact that Cavendish was the one to catch on and confront her wasn't surprising. He'd always been like a hawk circling overhead, patiently waiting for the perfect time to strike. He made no bones about the fact that he disliked her.

But no, that wasn't exactly the right word. Medina, with her casual cruelty and contempt, disliked her. The woman had made it clear she wouldn't care if Victoria disappeared in thin air.

But Cavendish gave off a totally different energy. He didn't want her simply gone—he wanted her humiliated...broken.

And he was eager to do the job himself. He was always watching every move she made when he was around. His eyes burned with loathing when he looked at her.

All of this ought to have been terrifying…and yet, for some reason, Victoria was mostly unmoved.

She had never been especially bold when confronted professionally. Usually, her hands shook and her voice trembled when she had to stand up for herself. But not today.

Maybe it was because this time, she wasn't fighting only for herself. There was a lot more on the line than her ego—or even her life. One hundred and twelve other lives hung in the balance, one of them Jax's. And that fact made Victoria feel braver than she'd ever felt before.

But it was going to take a lot more than reckless courage to be of any real help to Jax and the other alphas. That became clear a few hours later when Fulmer showed up and promptly called Cavendish into his office. A half-hour later, the door opened again, and Fulmer called her to join them.
