Amber

Liam was out of prison and on his way to Maine. He knew the truth, so we were surprised he was coming here. Samuel wanted to tell us something, I could tell by how he paced back and forth in the kitchen. “Samuel, spit it out. I know you have something to say, what is it?”

“I don’t understand why Liam is coming here, he knows the truth. He isn’t related to any of you. We haven’t seen him in so many years, why is he coming here?”

“Do you think he might start some trouble?”

“I don’t know why else he’s coming. I don’t want you girls to be alone with him. He’s pissed off because he blames your mother for everything, I don’t know what he’ll do. He’s angry at me because I told him not to come here. I explained that it was no use coming here because there was no family here for him.”

“I wondered about that myself. Axel and Opal will be in Montana and Ruby will be there too. We need to tell Jade. I don’t want him around her. She looks the most like our mother. Maybe she and Grandpa can go to Montana.”

“I’m not sure your grandpa will want to do that.”

“Yes, I will,” Grandpa said, walking into the kitchen. “I already told Jade that I wanted to go to Montana, we are leaving in an hour. I made reservations, I think you also need to leave, Amber. I have a bad feeling about him coming here. He got himself in this mess but he’ll want to blame you girls.”

“Grandpa, I’m a homicide detective, I can handle Liam. I will not leave. I’m staying here with Samuel. We’ll meet with Liam and see what he has to say. I’m sure everything will be okay. He must be devastated knowing the family he thought he had is no longer his family. He killed a man because he thought it would keep the children safe, and we’ve never been in danger. She lied to him, we didn’t. He was a child. I hate that she was my mother but we are not to blame for everything she did, and I won’t let anyone blame my sisters or me. I won’t run, afraid to look behind me for the rest of our lives. I’m making my stand right here right now, I will tell Jade goodbye, and then I have to go to work.”
