Pennington and the Abolition Movement
Pennington could not recall when he was not an abolitionist.1 He had long believed that the institution of slavery established on the principle of property in man should be unconditionally abolished. But only after witnessing the beating of his father did he become an active abolitionist by beginning to contemplate his escape to freedom. âAlthough it was sometime [after seeing my father beaten] before I took the decisive steps.â he recalled,â ⦠in my mind and spirit, I never was a slave after it.â Thus, Penningtonâs first act as an abolitionist was striking for his own freedom.
