CHAPTER 16

Skye

Drumming my fingers against the wooden table top, I sit, waiting patiently for Jules to appear.

We arranged to meet at The Cove Coffee Shop in Castleview to save me traveling to Bayview straight after work.

Inhaling the deep scent of comforting coffee reminds me of coming here with my mom on a Saturday while out shopping. I love this coffee shop.

With autumn now firmly taking hold, the dark nights are drawing in. As if someone flicked a switch it’s dark by six o’clock and next month the clocks go back, making it darker even earlier.

I love the colder months, but I prefer the summer sun.

I shiver, imagining the impending snow that’s on its way in a few months.

“Hey.” A male voice appears at my table.

Tilting my head to the side, I find myself looking at a portly-looking gentleman. Wild curly brown hair, with eyes to match. He looks nervous as he stands staring at me.

“Hi,” I reply before looking back out of the window, hoping this stranger leaves me alone.

“I’m Jules.”

Snapping my head back to look at him, I’m too stunned to say anything, as he takes a seat on the opposite side of the table.

“And you must be Skye? I recognize you from your video channel.” He pushes his hand out for me to shake.

I sit staring at him.

“Annddd you look like you’re not expecting me.” His face falls.

I wiggle in my seat uncomfortably. “Sorry. I was—well—” I stutter.

“Expecting a woman?” he smiles. “I get that a lot.”

“Yeah.” I shake my head. ‘Gosh, sorry.” Slapping my hand against my forehead. “Forgive my terrible manners. Let’s start again.” I hold my hand out for him to take this time. “Pleased to finally meet you, Jules. I’m Skye.” Getting over my initial shock, I try to be polite.

“Pleased to meet you too, Skye.” His hand feels clammy.

“What would you like to drink?” I start to push my chair back but Jules stops me, informing me he’ll get his own.

While he waits in the queue, baffled, I sit scrolling through my emails to see if there was any indication whatsoever that Jules was a man.

The clatter of cups and saucers surrounds me as I search.

But there’s nothing.

I pull up my video channel and check some of the comments from him.

You look so pretty today.

I am obsessed with your work.

I am your biggest fan!

I naturally assumed Jules was a woman. Then I invited him for coffee.

What a fool you are, Skye.

My only saving grace is that we are in a public place and he seems okay. Nervous. But okay.

Placing my phone back on the table. I pull my knee-high socks up as far as they will stretch. Tomorrow I will start wearing thick winter tights. I was cold today at work.

Jules reappears with a steaming cup of lemon tea and two icing-covered cinnamon buns. Oh, yummy.

“I got you a bun.” He lifts the plated sweet treat off the tray and passes me it, then places his hot tea and cake on the tabletop.

“I am starving.
