THE GHOST OF

SAMANTHA HARRINGTON

SAMANTHA WAS STILL asleep on the Sunday morning after William had left, when her phone rang out of the blue, “William?” She frantically reached for the phone while silently praying that it was him. “Sam, sorry, I mean, Sandra?” “Amanda? Shit Mands, you have to be more careful!” Samantha was at once annoyed that her friend had carelessly stumbled over her name. “Sorry! Old habits die hard. Listen, I’ve got the day off today and the kids are with their grandfather. I was hoping to come over and spend the day with you. Are you doing anything?” “No, nothing, I’m just not good company right now, but I’d love to see a familiar face. I would love to spend the day with you Mands.” “Okey-dokey! See you in a bit!” Amanda abruptly ended the call.

Samantha dragged herself out of bed, and strolled over to the bathroom mirror. “No wonder William wants Samantha over Sandra.” She whispered groggily as she gazed at her own reflection in the mirror. “Do I know you?” Samantha’s eyes were swollen and red, her skin was mottled and her hair appeared as though she was taken up by a hurricane and mercilessly spat out. She was intensely aware of what how she appeared on the outside, but she was far too anxious to imagine what the state of her heart was in. She heroically attempted to pull herself together, and after a swift shower and plenty of makeup, she was geared up to take on another day. Samantha glanced at her wrist watch, and realized that Amanda would arrive at any moment. She opened up a bottle of wine after she placed a freshly made salad in the fridge. Samantha recalled spending countless of Sundays with Amanda, as they cheerfully chatted over a salad and wine. They gossiped about all, and conversed about any matter that would come to mind. They habitually became a little intoxicated, and would ultimately indulge in girly talk.

William regularly joined the two tipsy ladies for a glass of wine, after which he would spend the remainder of the afternoon in the study, catching up on paperwork until Amanda had left. Samantha had only just poured herself a glass of wine when she heard Amanda’s car pull up into her driveway. She strolled out to meet her, clutching her glass in her hand. She had barely greeted Amanda when Samantha flung her arms around her friend, and began weeping mournfully. “What’s wrong, Sam, Sandra?” Amanda was at once concerned by Samantha’s sudden rupture of emotions. “William left me.” Amanda was at once bewildered and entirely befuddled, “I didn’t know you two were together again?” She was desperate to place the pieces together, “Does he know, Sam? Did you tell him?” From Samantha’s indignant expression, Amanda realized that she hadn’t divulged the truth to William. Samantha turned to return indoors before Amanda brusquely followed her. “Why don’t you just tell him, Sam? I believed you, didn’t I? You have to tell him.
