COPPERPLATE FLOURISHING: BASIC SHAPES

Copperplate flourishing, which initially appears to be very complicated, can be broken down into a few component shapes. We’ll start by drawing these forms with a pencil before either combining them with letters or working with pen and ink.

The essential form of most Copperplate letters and flourishes is an oval or ellipse. This is an o-form that consists of two sets of opposite curves. It can vary from quite narrow to almost round, but it is never absolutely circular.
