Chapter 14

The next day dawned bright and early with a frantic group text from Petty.

We need you both at Blackheart Castle!

Followed by: !!!

And then: !!!!!

He scrubbed his hand over his face. It was much too early for this, whatever it was.

Tomas hadn’t slept well. He’d gone to bed, but he hadn’t been able to even pretend to sleep until he heard Juniper come in. Her steps had been quiet on the stairs, and he’d heard her stop just outside his bedroom door.

He’d wanted to invite her in, with every fiber of his being, but his mouth wouldn’t obey him. So he’d lain there, long into the dark, silent night with regret on his mind, yet unable to summon the courage to take that step.

He’d tossed and turned, exhausted, but still unable to drift off to sleep. Dawn had already started to creep pink and soft across the sky when he’d finally gotten to sleep. He might’ve been asleep for three hours, at the most.

Then he heard Juniper’s phone ring through the thin walls.

It wasn’t long before she knocked on his door and opened it. Juniper looked as tired as he felt.

“Did someone die?” he asked.

“No, but they need us. There’s been an incident.”

“What now?”

“I know, right?” She rubbed her eyes sleepily and padded over to the bed, where she flopped next to him.

It was second nature to pull her near, to wrap them both together in the blankets. He was immediately at peace, and ready to go back to sleep. This, her, was what he’d needed all along. The fact wasn’t a surprise to him.

“I just want to go back to sleep,” she murmured.

“You look how I feel,” he said.

“Thanks.” Her tone was dry.

“No problem.”

She smelled so good, he just wanted to bury his face in her hair and drown there.

“We should get moving. The grandmothers need us.”

“What happened?”

“You didn’t read the rest of the text, did you?” She sighed. “So the wedding tonight? The groom wanted to surprise his bride by flying her aunt in from France. They thought she wasn’t going to be able to come, but Jackson made it happen for her.”

“Oh, do they need us to go pick up Auntie from the airport? Maybe we can get some breakfast on the way.” His stomach rumbled in favor of the plan.

“Not exactly. Jackson and Betina left for the airport early this morning. Their rental broke down on the way back and they’re waiting for someone to bring them another car. The problem is that Betina and Jackson were both cutting it close with final fittings with Rosebud, and a final walkthrough of the ceremony tonight. They need us to stand in.”

A cold wash of something ugly splashed over him. He swore. “They just can’t leave us alone, can they? They won’t stop until they have us trotting down the aisle for real.”

Juniper stiffened and pulled away. “Are you serious right now?”

He sat up and scrubbed a hand over his face and through his hair. “Are you blind?
