Chapter 14
The next day dawned bright and early with a frantic group text from Petty.
We need you both at Blackheart Castle!
Followed by: !!!
And then: !!!!!
He scrubbed his hand over his face. It was much too early for this, whatever it was.
Tomas hadnât slept well. Heâd gone to bed, but he hadnât been able to even pretend to sleep until he heard Juniper come in. Her steps had been quiet on the stairs, and heâd heard her stop just outside his bedroom door.
Heâd wanted to invite her in, with every fiber of his being, but his mouth wouldnât obey him. So heâd lain there, long into the dark, silent night with regret on his mind, yet unable to summon the courage to take that step.
Heâd tossed and turned, exhausted, but still unable to drift off to sleep. Dawn had already started to creep pink and soft across the sky when heâd finally gotten to sleep. He mightâve been asleep for three hours, at the most.
Then he heard Juniperâs phone ring through the thin walls.
It wasnât long before she knocked on his door and opened it. Juniper looked as tired as he felt.
âDid someone die?â he asked.
âNo, but they need us. Thereâs been an incident.â
âWhat now?â
âI know, right?â She rubbed her eyes sleepily and padded over to the bed, where she flopped next to him.
It was second nature to pull her near, to wrap them both together in the blankets. He was immediately at peace, and ready to go back to sleep. This, her, was what heâd needed all along. The fact wasnât a surprise to him.
âI just want to go back to sleep,â she murmured.
âYou look how I feel,â he said.
âThanks.â Her tone was dry.
âNo problem.â
She smelled so good, he just wanted to bury his face in her hair and drown there.
âWe should get moving. The grandmothers need us.â
âWhat happened?â
âYou didnât read the rest of the text, did you?â She sighed. âSo the wedding tonight? The groom wanted to surprise his bride by flying her aunt in from France. They thought she wasnât going to be able to come, but Jackson made it happen for her.â
âOh, do they need us to go pick up Auntie from the airport? Maybe we can get some breakfast on the way.â His stomach rumbled in favor of the plan.
âNot exactly. Jackson and Betina left for the airport early this morning. Their rental broke down on the way back and theyâre waiting for someone to bring them another car. The problem is that Betina and Jackson were both cutting it close with final fittings with Rosebud, and a final walkthrough of the ceremony tonight. They need us to stand in.â
A cold wash of something ugly splashed over him. He swore. âThey just canât leave us alone, can they? They wonât stop until they have us trotting down the aisle for real.â
Juniper stiffened and pulled away. âAre you serious right now?â
He sat up and scrubbed a hand over his face and through his hair. âAre you blind?
