1884

Elfego Baca’s Shootout

Nineteen-year-old Elfego Baca listened with mounting horror to Deputy Sheriff Pedro Sarracino’s story. The deputy was from the tiny village of Frisco (present-day Reserve), but he had traveled about 130 miles east to Socorro to see Baca at the store in which he worked. Sarracino visited Socorro often, and practically every time he did, he stopped to chat with Baca. Years later Baca recalled the conversation the pair had on this day in October 1884.

He told me that before he left Frisco for Socorro about six or seven cowboys got hold of a Mexican called “El Burro.” They laid him down on the counter; one of the boys sat on his chest and arms and the other one on his lap, and that right then and there poor Burro was altered in the presence of everybody.

Then a man by the name of Epitacio Martinez who happened to be present objected and begged them not to do that. The result was that after they were finished with Burro the same cowboys got hold of Epitacio Martinez and measured about twenty or thirty steps from where they were and tied him.

They used Epitacio as a target, and they bet drinks on who was a better shooter. Martinez was shot four different times, but still he would not die.
