Brad punched the shank down again, scouring the Horkey berg. Andy tried to kick off the mass, only to wedge his feet in one of the many sludgy crevices. He dangled from it as the chop-sticked Horkey raft was lifted from the water. Andy bent his knees and straightened them, trying to kick himself free, but found his feet cemented.

The tear in the Scavenger’s flesh quivered. A flurry of small, clawed hands butterflied from the arterial cut.

They flapped onto the Horkey raft, pinching and peeling pieces of it off and flying the chunks into the Scavenger’s slurping mouth. A cluster of handflies landed on Andy’s hips, pinching and needling at his fat. Andy pounded and punched until they flew onto the main mass and wrenched loose a Horkey chunk that was holding Andy in place. Andy fell face-first back into the water. He kicked to the land where two hands grabbed Andy’s shirt and pulled him out of the water. Andy sturdied himself to face Isaak and Abel. Abel was crying.

“I’m not the Willing Finger,” Abel said.

“We have to kill the Scavenger,” said Andy.

“He’s feeding,” said Abel. “He already has a nest. We need to regroup at the school. Let’s go!” The hand swarm scattered from the creature. Isaak and the brothers ran up the hill.

Jordan was on his knees trying to pick the lock to the school with Erin’s knife. He was not getting far at all when Isaak, Abel, and Andy reached them soaking and panting. “Move,” said Andy.

“I almost got it,” said Jordan.

“I got keys,” said Andy. Andy shoved Jordan onto

his hindquarters as he brandished the key he had ripped from Horkey’s corpse. He pushed it into the lock. The door opened. Everyone poured into the school. Andy locked the door after Jordan stood and sauntered inside.

Abel found a plaid jacket and some gym shorts in the lost- and-found.

Andy looked down at his feet, which had seemed to dry already, yet they were still battered in hardening Scavenger tar.
