Those agents who experience less pleasure in anticipation and consummation, and fail to successfully represent experiences as pleasant (e.g., people with schizophrenia who have flattened emotions or experience pleasant emotions less frequently due to lack of socialization), are also less likely to act on their beliefs to achieve their goals. Emotional disturbances may contribute to a failure of motivation, which results in an agent ceasing to pursue her goals. Emotional excesses and deficits or lack of emotional regulation resulting in anger, anxiety and severe distress are common in a variety of psychiatric disorders (e.g., depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, psychopathy), and in people affected by such disorders the motivation to act is indeed compromised, suggesting that emotions are central to motivation (Bortolotti 2010; Bortolotti and Broome 2012).
